Am just updating my stereo in the torrie and currently have 6 inch speakers in the back parcel shelf, and was wondering if anyone has got 6x9's in their back parcel shelf and do the fit OK ?

Thanks in advance ...

Fit okay in what way? As in not having to cut holes? Or physically fitting on there?

They will easily fit on there, but it may get tricky (I presume) if you wanna have it through the standard holes, then you have to get the little angled box things and the magnet hangs through the std. sized hole, the box bolts gets attached to the parcel shelf and the it's all nice and safe with Mr. Plod.

If you're experimenting with box angles etc, just make sure you make enough clearance for the rear screen, and you're set. There's heaps of room otherwise.

I'd hazard a guess half the forum has 6x9 in the rear shelf, yes they will fit.

Sorry, prob physically fit with "minor" modification to the rear parcel shelf. I am yet to have a thorough look, but was wondering if there is any metal inside the boot that may hinder putting them in. But seems as tho they should be OK going by the above comments ... I would prefer to have them sitting flush with the shelf as the 6's are now and not in a angled box.

Thanks for your replies.

My old A9X had some 80's pioneer 6by9's in the parcel shelf but they were mounted with the speakers underneath the parcel shelf with only the grilles on top.
I hate having the sound coming from behind me though!

If your car is 'collectable', i wouldn't go cutting the parcel shelf.
It may just be my humble ears, but i think a better sound is achieved by flush mounting the rear speakers, as opposed to angle fit.
That should open some interesting discussion.

Also cutting into the metal of the parcel shelf can end you up with a yellow sticker as its part of chassis. One of the lines on the yellow sticker slip that came with my lx has this!

Dont know about the LH/x. however the UC comes with existing holes on the parcel shelf for speakers. They arent big enough for 6x9's. Ive mounted 6x9s in my torrie with 1.5 inch spacers, and just a bit of deforming of the hole to allow even a huge magnet on the back of a 6x9 to drop into the boot space and have enough air clearance to work effectively......cant see that that could weaken anything. Had to do it with the spacers otherwise speakers wouldnt clear lpg tank below......goes without saying.....do all the drilling for the speakers b4 putting a tank in there.
When I bought the car the speakers(cheap ones) were in angle boxes, the speakers I have now sound much better lying flat, though we are comparing apples with oranges in terms of the speaker quality. My thoughts would be, most of the information the mid/high frequency info you need for sound location is well reflected off the rear window towards the front of the car when they are lying flat.

I think that the issue with the canary is that when people do fit big speakers they often cut out the child anchorage mounting points which is illegal.

In the UC i made up wooden boxes myself for the 6x9s to sit on rear parcel shelf with magnet sitting flush/just below hole for factory speaker. Worked a treat and cost me nothing. But the spacers you can buy from the shops are reasonably cheap anyway. I had planned on carpeting the rear shelf and the boxes but ended up selling the car instead.

I am currently having the same problem with rear speakers in the LX myself!,I am only running 2 x 6" JBL speakers in the rear at the moment but am unhappy with the performance the way it is . I have just made up some new Kick panels in the front of the car and am thinking of trying to get the 6"JBL speakers on the kick panels and opting for some 6x9" up the back?. I am pretty sure 6x9" dont fit in the standard speaker holes provided and the speaker spacers will be required,I have been told numerous times here in W.A you can not alter the size of the holes in the steel section of the parcel shelf as it usually = YELLOW STICKER?.

The other prob is even with the spacers there is a fitting problem in regards to drilling holes etc as a 90 degree drill is needed to do this, unless your rear window in out of the vehicle for some reason. ahhhhh Torana's,one hurdle after another :D

I'm sure you could drill from underneath if needed. It's often just accepted that in older cars like torries you mount the speakers on the parcel shelf (like a period thing). Any good system will have the speakers and 'stage' coming from the front of the car. A lot of audiophiles don't utilise the parcel shelf for rear fill unless they have back seat passengers all the time.

Yeh to mount my home made pods i "simplely" laid in the boot and drilled up from underneth. The trickey part was getting out again! If you make a template of your box/spacer and put that underneth the parcel shelf should help line up holes, but i made a few hit n misses...

^ Very much so. My car will be recieving a subbie and the front stage, with the rear stage as a low priority which may come later. I'm not an audiophile, but I bet you can guess who suggested it, Sean ;)

well, i have a 12mm mdf parcel shelf, underneath the standard parcel shelf, you will find push out panels that were for the optional 6x4 speakers
i just 'massaged' these holes out towards the c pillar with an angle grinder
didn't take out any of the mounting points for anything, and then just bolted the new parcel shelf in
if you have access to a plasma cutter, this would be a lot neater.
i realise i have 'affected' the structural integrity of my car, and possibly made it unroadworthy, but nothing was mentioned to me when i was last defected, or at any other time
if ever i get picked up for this, i will simply weld some supports in around the speakers

cheers

now before you all go what a tight ass just rememeber that if the cars sitting out in the sun the sun will fade crack and dry up your 6x9s

the lj has what were worth 400 dollar 6x9s about 5 years ago

now there starting to go ..... and thats got a wayyyy dark tinted rear window to protect them a bit better

plus the fact that its not easy doing up 5 cars at once :P

Fabo I reckon that's fair enough. You don't need a top knotch stereo, and even crap hardware will that's set up right will impress youngens who don't know anything about stereos, so I wouldn't worry, lol.

Guys, I would love to see some pics of these set-ups of 6x9's on the back shelf and how they sit in there.
Thanks in advance ...

well obviously, i hav started this exact same thread without even seeing this one. woops.
im in the same boat with u pallbag.
im heading towards gettting the spacers, but not angled cos my speakers are already angled, that was the model, (kenwood 350watt 6 x 9).
previous owner hacked the shit outa the standard holes, n thus making it impossible to even put the 6" speakers into the parcel shelf. so 6" are goin in kick panels, and 6 x 9's in the back
if getting spacers, would it better to super super glue them in or drill from the boot up?

They have to be screwed or bolted in. Don't want them flying forwards during hard braking...

Would hate to guess at the temps reached in the assembly of a speaker in direct sunlight.......damage cone materials(dont know about kevlar) and glues. I wouldnt be sticking anything expensive in the parcel shelf without direct sun protection. A material cover over the grille wont cut it(it will still get very hot) it nor will tinted glass, direct sunlight must be shielded. Dare I say a louvre is a great thing, keeps the car cooler, adds privacy, stops icing of rear window.......Ive got em on all my ucs, they look naked without them. Dont know if you can still buy them new or not.

Just a word on installing the speakers. You dont need any right angle drill, as stated ^ drill from underneath for the ones closest to the screen(, you need to do this b4 installing a lpg tank) Id also recommend using long bolts rather than self tap screws if using large spacers. You may have to go to a specialist nut and bolt shop to get a set long and thin enough, but it makes installation and removal much easier by just winding the nut from underneath, you can put some sort of wedge on the top to stop the bolt turning if you dont have a second person to help and never have to worry about the the exact diameter of holes/screws etc and removes the problem of trying to do the one up closet to the glass(very close with spaces) with a right angle screw driver etc. Id also recommend using wing nuts rather than conv nuts, that will make them easy to do up from inside the boot.

Depending on how much time you have on your hands, would recommend buying the spacers, can buy large plastic ones for 6x9 rather than 2 sets of smaller ones. Yes they are expensive for a piece of plastic or wood cut to the right shape. In my personal UC, I firstly jigsawed spacers for 6 x 9 and 6.5 circular and with the help of a wood lathe, several coats of gloss wood stain have very smic looking spacers, and yes they are better than anything one can buy, but it would need a few hours with sandpaper and chisel to get close to the same finishif you just jigsawed them. But for the other UC's I just bought the spacers!
