There are two main differences:

#1 Blue/Black six has a fully counterweighted crank from the factory.
#2 Blue/Black six has extra coolant passages to suit the extra passages in the Blue/Black head.

The injected VK 3.3 will be a lot smoother than a Red 202 with triple Webers, but the EFI manifold and throttle body may be a restriction at high RPM.

so chopper a blue/black block would be a better building platform for a worked holden 6 than a red 186? I am looking into an engine upgrade and would consider getting an old blue/black 202 and having it rebuilt if it will go harder that a red 186?

sorry it kind of off topic but it got me thinking

cheers antony

Agree with chopper, the factory counterweight cranks add to reliability when the engine is often spun up to around 6500, anything over that would require the standard blue or black crank to be precisely balanced at a crankshaft specialist. my crank is a blue crank that has been arrowed, balanced and heat treated as a result i can spin mine up to 8000rpm without any problem whatsoever. if you want to build a tough six, start with a strong bottom end, use arp big and little end bolts, no less that tri metal engine bearings (ACL or FEDERAL MOGOL), run a windage tray and crank scraper in the sump (High energy can make you one) run blue or black motor rods (starfire) and get them balanced with a set of ACL Race series pistons. The cam, head, intake and exhaust components can be whatever you desire, the main emphasis is reliability, so get the bottom end tough as nails and running well balanced and you will be suprised how hard a 6cyl can perform.

Hey turbotorana, that sounds like a real nice engine.... how much does a package like that cost to put together? And what sort of performance do you get? I spose it would spin quite freely....any idea on HP output?
Sorry for the 3rd degree...

With a turbo, I think he was aiming/getting 500+ HP.

one downside noones mentioned of the black motors..........
if its going in a registered car then you have to meet ALL the pollution requirements of a BLACK MOTOR......regardless if its going in a non pollution car EG LC TORANA
and we all know that non efi black motors when brand new had to have air pumps on them to meet the pollution requirements.........you have been warned!!!!

black 202 has a air pump, its got a couple of hoses, bolts and a belt, if you can tell the difference between webbers and injectors you can handle the air pump, it also has to have a purge tank, again a couple of screws and hoses and thats hooked up. it has a superior head to the red motor, something i think that was not mentioned, yep its a 12 port. the other thing is the varijet carbie, it has a switch on it to advance your timing in certain rev ranges, so leave the varijet on it! i would say if you are going to the trouble to change the engine you are better off putting a black or blue one in.

blue 202 is not efi

vk efi 202 has a computer goes harder than any carbie 202, stock.

i dont see why you couldnt use the original fuel system.

post a pic of your car postal dood

oh and someone told me once that a stock black 12 port head shits all over a stage 4 yella terra.

i did not know yella terra had stages but it came from a farly reliable source.

prove this wrong if you can. i dont know the truth.

at the of the day the engine has to comply with the cars adrs date of manufacture
my mates got 5.o efi in an lj and it had to comply with the adrs of the car not the engine.

That's fantastic news, I hope that wasn't just a mistake by whatever party was official there, and applies to all cars with engine swaps.

If you use a Blue/Black head and crank in a pre ADR27A block in a pre ADR27A car, no pollution crap is needed.
