Was driving and putting some km's on the torana last night and noticed there was a shake coming thru the steering wheel.

Not sure if this is a common occurance with 17's and low profile tyres on early holdens or if something is touching the shaft. Some roads its fine others it would shake.

Has new steering rack bushes, new tie rods, new bushes and balljoint, everything is rebuilt except for the steering coupling and the steel knuckle + steering column.
All new brakes, bearings etc.

I plan on putting some 15" stock rims with high profile tyres and see if the problem disappears but I cant do that til next week.

Anyone had a similar situation?

Has it been wheel aligned?
Wheel balance?

Wheel balance?

Wheel aligned, but takes left hand corners with ease, needs another alignment as its way off.
Wheels balanced, yes but Im going to get them rebalanced as well.

Think it might be in the wheels?

When my LX first hit the road, sometimes you would get a vibration through the steering wheel under full throttle - it was the extractors just touching the steering column. I just loosened the 3 bolts under the dash and wriggled the column across to the right hand size on the slots and it has never done it again.

So was this the inaugral drive? how does it go :))

Before pulling stuff apart, just balance and align the wheels again... could save you a lot of heart-ache

Wheel alignment should not cause a vibration. Wheel balance will, usually around 80 k's or so. All the front end components should be within spec and serviceable as well, (this should be checked before the wheel alignment). Most good wheel aligners will not align a dodgy front ened, its a waste of money and time.

Other things that can cause a vibration include out of round tyres, try swapping front to rear to see if this fixes it.

Jack the front wheels up and test the wheel bearings..while you are there give the wheels a spin to check for run out..it is possible that they are balanced but still have run out.

Mat driven it 4 times now, feels good, goes good.
Thought it might of been the pipes touching, but it was doing it on acceleration and deceleration, comes and goes.

Tyres are brand new Continentals, Front bearings are all new as per Hopper Stoppers kit.

Im leading towards the column bearing as well, but I will do the basics first and it really does need another alignment so Ill go from there and rebalance the wheels as those stick on weights may have fallen off or something.

Cant change front to rear wheels, are front are 215's and rear are 255's, wont fit on non-flared LX. So ill just put some stocko's on and see

Changing the wheels is a good diagnostic tool, however if it is doing it on acceleration and deceleration what speed? It could be a driveline issue like unis, engine or gearbox mounts.

Eliminate the wheels first by doing the swap and then let us know how you go. (Standard rates apply, overseas calls may incur an additional fee).

Its coming thru the steering wheel, eg. my arms shake like Im using a jack pick. so its something along the way from the steering wheel to the rack to the tyres on the ground, nothing else is connected, the body doesnt vibrate or shake just the steering wheel.

Thanks all for your replies so far, keep em coming. After 3 years building and finally engineered and registered Ive got 3 niggly teething problems I need to sort out so Im pretty happy with that.

If its coming through the steering wheel it is most likely in the front wheels/suspension - do the wheel change thingy and let us know how you go.

And while they're on the back, a couple of burnouts to true them up again :spoton:

I run 4" Backspace but the diff is shorter then standard torana length. 0 offset

If it comes and goes, the problem could be due to at least one of the front wheels is on the edge of acceptable balance tolerances. What can happen it gets in sync with the other front wheel's slight imperfection and that together may add up to a vibration. This can happen also if you have two rims with slight bends/flat spots providing vertical run out(is that correct to refer to it as vertical run out?), which wouldnt show up when balancing the tyres.
Its fairly easy to pick if this is the case, when the problem occurs just give a couple of short flicks of the steering wheel when going in a straight line to break the synchronisation and see if the problem is affected by this.

Ill give the flick of the wheel a shot and see how it goes, might take it for a lap tonight if I dont get blocked in by 3 other cars.

Ill keep u posted

Took it out to get some pics yesterday, drove for about 20 minutes and no shake, last time it took about 1/2 hour before I noticed the shake thru the steering wheel, something strange but Ill keep an eye out and see if it happens again.
