Hello all,

I was just wondering what it takes to put a 350 chev into a LX 4 door. Do you need to cut up or modify the cross member in anyway or the bodywork. Also same goes for a gearbox. Maybe something like a T400. Something that is strong but not rediculous to drive.

If anyone has done this conversion some info on it would be greatly appreciated. I know i'll need an engineers cert. but thats not a problem.

Thanks folks :spoton:

Set of chev-to-holden adapters for the engine mounts, radiator, mine has a powerglide with a standard trimatic gearbox mount, and a set of extractors-custom 1's recommended

Oh forgot to ask. Do you need to use a special type of sump.

Use a hq style chev sump, or better still get a high-energy or similar one

compare a 350 chev @ 400hp to a 308 @ 400hp and the chev is way better for the street more torque less effort, and parts for a 308 arent all that cheap

400hp 308 bout 8k bolt in. u do the sums. sorry 308 will produce same torque figures as a 8k 350. years ago peeps used chev because 308 hot up bits were hard to get and cost heaps

I agree with oldschool in that 308s are FINALLY as easy to do up as a chev. However... sound better!?!? :fighting: Puhleeeeease!!

Consider a hot stroker holden engine, with VN heads theyre a great engine. But....

If you wanna rev it... CHEV it ;)
(sorry... i couldnt help myself!) :stirpot:

Cheers!

Thats the thing it may cost 8k to build a 400hp 308 but you can go and buy a fully reco'd 395hp 350 chev from suburban imports that is nearlly complete(Doesn't have an alternator, exhaust and I think a flex plate) for $5700 with a 12month warranty. To me that is a sweet deal. Why because it is a good price and you have the option of upgrading that motor later to something really serious. You can even buy brand new 375hp motors off them that are pretty much complete too for $5950. Speaking of strokers they also do a new 383 for $6700

I haven't ruled out a 308 it's just that there are so many 350 options out there and good 308 blocks are getting to get. Thats my opinion anyway :D

If you want more inches you only have to get a 350 or a 400, no stroker cranks needed!!! And with things like new eagle cranks for around the $400 mark compared to $1000+ for a 308/355 crank, there's a big savings in $$$, and the sound of a chev at idle with a big solid in it, or at full noise...mmmmmmm

not if you have a small size cap, mine has a msd unit on it with smaller cap and plenty of clearance behind it.

I think I have created a monster with this thread  I like it.

With the radiator do you use any particular one or does it have to be a custom type.

So if I use a short style cap on the dizzy it should be fine?

That's still not to bad a price if it's got some good gear in it. but i'm with dattoman you should be able to build one a bit cheaper. I'm lucky because my little lady is a qualified grease monkey so she can build it up for me :D

Use the smaller cap and use a hq-z chev 3core or 5core radiator, or get an alloy 1...

Chev Engines come with 4 bolt mains another reason to consider chev over holden.
I am considering a 395 hp new (not reco) vortec chev 350 with 4 bolt mains, gm factory hot cam ,roller rockers, 64cc cylinder heads, GM performance intacke, 750 holley,HEI distributor ETC $6950

I have a chev in my car, but if I was to build another LH-X torana i would put a holden stroker with efi heads in it. No engineering!!

You have to consider the cost of an engineer, custom pipes, chassis kit, big brakes. All this needs to be paid for before the car can hit the street legally.

Holden V8's can be stroked at reasonable prices, efi heads flow really well standard.

Food for thought.

Well Are there no Holden block with 4 bolts mains? What it worth to get 4 bolts mains in a 308?

Custom pipes , chassis kit and big brakes would still be mandatory for a 400hp 308 too
I can't see any real savings on engineering costs as you would do this with the brakes etc anyway

If you want to rev it... Chev it

Chev has advantages with 5 head bolts around bore, whereas the holden only has only 4. This gives better head to block sealing around bore area which is better for high comp engines and nos/forced induction engines. Not putting down a holden engine at all, they are pulling serious HP from them. I agree with LX406 it is easyer to just put a holden in a torana, you can buy off the shelf pipes and no changing of engine mounts, etc. In saying that if you have a potent holden you will still need custom pipes as there are no of the shelf headers that are big enough to work well with 550HP plus.
