you will need to eather re drill the axels and disks between the current holes (dodge way) or get new axels made up and order up blank disks (legal way).

to make handbrake work, most i have seen you just use the fud handbrake and make it fit up in the cab, not to hard really.

Legally, new discs and axles. It's illegal to weld discs and axles. It's also stupid to weld them to each other. 28 spline billet axles are $264 each. Disc price depends on which ones they are. Then you pay for drilling and new studs. The handbrake cable will be the easy bit.

Barry at Trans Diff in Bayswater. That was for 28 spline BW axles, but the 28 spline billets can be used in 9" diffs as well. So he says. I'm fairly sure he said $240 plus GST. He didn't state a lenght, if that makes a difference.

I suspect that does make a difference because that is where I started investigation so I suspect either they have reduced in price or they are standard length...

Cheers

Well i think the diff has to be cut down to fit under the torry and me mate has a heap different length axles so he will probably have the right ones that im after, so then ill probably just have to get the blank discs, right?? (i dont know much about axles, diffs and brakes.)

A stock width ( 61" flange to flange ) is a bit too wide, considering an LH - UC diff is 55" flange to flange. LC/LJ are even narrower. Remember, the 9" diff has one axle 4" shorter than the other. Have you got something 4" long to check the difference?

well i think i asked you a similar question on the last forum, but i just wanted to freshen up my memory on whats involved.
the diffs at my mates house so i cant readily check it out. But i think my mate knows what to do, i just wanted to get more familiar with the process - i never knew that one axle was 4" shorter than the other.

That's the way they make the 9" because of the offset crownwheel. The BW diffs that are in the Commodores and Foulcans have a 2" lenght difference in the axles.

Cool, makes sense.
when the axles get replaced, can i put other ones in with more splines or does other stuff need to be changed too, or am i totally barking up the wrong tree?

Just leave it Ford pattern
And buy blank discs and drill them to Ford pattern
114.3x5 is alot easier to get decent wheels for than 108x5

Yeah i know, thats what Chopper said to me last time on the last forum, but ive got some nice 15x8 + 15x10 Dragway Indys which are torana stud pattern, and i dont intend on selling them in the near future. Thanks for the suggestion though, ill probably do that on my next build up. :spoton:

Even the tyre problem kinda shits me, at the moment the backs are 275/50/15, but id love 285/40/15 or even in 285/35/15.

285/40R15's are hard to find. 285/35R15's are impossible as they don't exist. I have some 285/35's in the garage, but they are 18" slicks off the back of Jim Richards Porsche.

Andrews Traction Tyres in Rowville VIC got some Yokohamas in last year. Whether he has any left or not is another matter. That was the first batch I'd heard of in many years to enter the country.

Oh and one last question, i asked about this on the old forum but i need a freshen up.

Chopper i remember you saying that something needs to be done to the proportioning valve when fitting rear discs, could you enlighten me on the subject again?

Cheers. :spoton:

There are two things normally required.

#1 There is a residual line pressure valve in the rear brake circuitry of the master cylinder. Remove the rear line to the m/c, remove the brass olive WITHOUT DAMAGING IT ( not available new ) and then you can remove the residual line pressure valve. Carefully re-assemble and bleed after you do the second thing.

#2 There is the proportioning valve. This alters the presure to the rear brakes. Different pressure is needed for discs and drums. From memory, the two pressures are 300 PSI and 1000 PSI. dattoman would be able to give a better explanation. It's not hard to guess what would happen if the wrong valve is there.

Thanks Chopper,

so you actually have to replace the proportioning valve with one out of a car that has 4 discs?

Yes. You can buy adjustable ones, but the wreckers should have the one you need. Maybe.
