It can possibly come down to a few things: Do you wantt to spray it yourself ie at home than acylic is the way to go. 2pac needs the correct facilities to spray (booth etc), but will give a great finish of the gun & is a lot tuffer.

It also comes down to $$$, acylic is cheaper & more forgiving to spray. If it comes to originality, than yes acylic. Keep in mind the vast majority of paint shops will only do 2pac now days !!

Acrylic always comes up shinier, provided it is done right. One the down side it suffers from shrink back, so your preperation has to be A1. I actually take my prep to 1000 grit wet and dry these days to get a perfect finish (can get away with 600 with 2 pack). Comes up similar to two pack off the gun, but comes up heaps better when it is compounded (back to dull finish) then polished back up. Acrylic never 100% dries, and is very versatile (can use vertually 80% thinners if you want to.

There is a heap more work in getting a good acrylic finish, but the result is very very rewarding, and if you f*ck up, you can fix up.

Two pack is very precise in the amount of hardeners you need. You used to have to redo whole panels, but even with two pack, you can now touch up with the more modern systems.

There's heaps to it these days. Basically the Automotive distributors deal with the old technology, the specialist automotive paint shops deal with the new modern paint systems.

Oh, also, acrylic uses a 1.8??? mm nozzle, whereas 2 pack only uses 1.2???mm nozzle. Different sizes anyways, can't remember exact sizes.

2 pak is more durable, acrylic is more labour intensive. MYLJ will no doubt jump in here on the acrylic side.

Both will last a long time provided you look after them. You can abuse 2 pack more, i.e. don't look after it, and it will keep looking good, where as acrylic will decay rapidly without regular maintenance (polish), especially the turret and the bonnet.

yep............. :D

acrylic is all I use now, if you want that original look, then acrylic is the way to go :D

also a lot easier to repair than 2pak too.

I agree, acrylic all the way.
Do it right for your type of car & you will never look back.
There is a really good 1k primer you use under acrylic.
Some people use 2k primer but it doesn't give the correct paint adhesion
properties.
Talk to your paint supplier about it.
Cheers Tangey.

One thing about 2pac, it might be tougher (so they say), but you get a minor scratch in it and the paint is stuffed, you can't polish it like acrylic.

2 pac. dont even look at acrylic. 3 coats of 2pac is equal to 12 of acrylic. and for scratch removal, 2 pac again, you can put so much heat into it with the buff its not funny. 2 pac is shinny-er :tease: if done right lasts 10 times long and is heaps tougher. repairing it is easier due to colour matching. the old guys wont agree cause there old :D

i did 'paint correction' for 6 odd years....

If you are not painting it yourself, then 2pac, no one can paint acrylic these days. I still don't believe 2 pac is that much better, shinnier yeah, but it absorbes bird shit and alike just as much as acrylic

I don't think they do it anymore because you wouldn't be able to afford to pay them what it costs to do a good acrylic paint job. Interestingly enough, all the top custom and hot rod guys still use acrylic.

Here's the last whole car I painted ---> acrylic. Dunno, why, I just like acrylic, there is just something about it, dunno what.

I like shiny things. I think acrylic is shinier than 2 pack. Found out last week, that the latest 2 packs you can actually touch up, i.e. not repaint whole panels.

i have painted 3 cars in acrylic now. But im only just starting to really know what i am doing now. I am in the process of cutting back my girlfriends car i just painted in Acrylic, and so far its coming up REALLY REALLY good.

My local paintshop Put me onto using Protec Super clear, (acrylic) and this stuff is so much shinier than normal acrylic when polished up. I would love to see what a pro could do with this stuff!

anyway if u are paying someone else to do it, just get it done in 2k

Thanks everyone I thinks the acrylics win. Next question, ball park figure for a
paint job. Does it have to go back to bare metal if painting same colour?

Thanks again
John.

I think that is the killer question. If you are paying somebody to do it, go 2 pack, cause your not going to be able to afford to pay somebody to do acrylic, and that is presuming you can find somebody that will do it.

2 pack is only cheaper than acrylic if you are satisfied with the quality of paint that you get on the new Commodores ( orange peel ). Try looking at reflections in the paint on a new Commodore and compare it with the reflection in the paint on a Torana.

The reason that 2 pack is cheaper on a average paint job is that once the paint is applied you have finished, whereas with acrylic the paint has to be rubbed down and compounded.

If you want a show quality paint job in 2 pack it will cost significantly more than acrylic.

You should consider using 2 pack in the engine bay regardless of your choice of paint for the body. Acrylic is susceptible to oil, brake fluid, fuel etc and engine bays are difficult to polish.

Sorry to steal the thread a bit, but what would I be expecting to pay for an acrylic paint job for my LJ, in the original Purr Pull, doing everything (read: Everything. Panelwork, prep, paint, finish etc) myself? Compared to a 2K job?

I don't just want to go the cheap option, but I want to be able to be able to repair stone chips etc, of which I will be getting a few of. So would Acrylic suit my application better?

Tim

i doubt that you'll find a panel shop willing to do acrylic.its to labour intensive. 2 pac is easier to repair too.
