Certainly changed my idea of mechanical pumps, didn't know they were capable of such things!! Why the desire to change to back, any specific problem/reason or just sick of the noise :)

Not that I have any experience whatsoever, but the 170 HP seems like a good idea if it works without a reg, why have one when you don't need to?? And it looks pretty impressive too!

Either of the 2 Holley pumps will work fine. A Holley won't require a regulator at 8psi, a Qjet will.

Think of the hose sizes as 16ths. ie -8 is 8/16 or 1/2 inch, -10 is 10/16 or 5/8".

In the US of A the Stewart pump (what you refer to as the Quickfuel) has had a fair few problems with vapour lock. This seems to be cured with the use of an insulating mounting spacer/gasket. If you buy one make sure you get this gasket/spacer. This pump really is a fresh approach, works sort of like a master cylinder.

Hope this helps.

Sam... no MAIN reason why I'm changing back... just several minor reasons.... no more noise and no more wiring are two good ones. Also, my pump does get hot sitting near my tailpipes, it's so tight under the rear of my car with the 120litre droptank, 9", twin tailpipes etc... I've experienced vapour lock (I believe) a couple of times now. Also a mechanical pump will just be more reliable, quiet, & hassle-free. I'm going to try it, if I have any problems I'll change back, but I don't think I will!

Struggler, thanks for the explanation on the sizings, that's very handy to know. I'll put that away in the memory banks.

I will also make sure LX406 reads that stuff about the Stewart pump, because he is looking at purchasing one to replace his Barry Grant elec setup. I'm pretty keen on one of the Holley pumps myself, so just gotta price them up now and decide!

Cheers once again fella's.

CRIKEY!! I finally priced up the Holley pumps. I really, really want the billet HP series one, but it's $413, whereas the standard 170GPH pump is only $194. Pretty big difference, not sure what to do now, lol!! An extra $220, but I wouldn't need a reg. Hmmmm... tough one.

I might have to toss a coin. Knowing my history though, I will just lash out and buy the HP one! hahahaha.

Damn, thats quite a price difference for a bit of bright stuff. Looking at this in a totally impartial manner...you should get the billet item because it will match the rest of your engine bay and how you are trying to keep making it look sharp :P completely impartial.

Well it's been about 6 months since I updated this thread.... but I finally picked up my new pump today... I ended up getting the Holley 170GPH HP series billet one. Heaps cheaper now too (maybe the Aussie dollar is helping)... also bought a Speed Flow fuel rail, so now all I need is a cool fuel filter and I'll be ready to fit everything and plumb it all up. Will be good to see how it performs. Time to say goodbye to electric fuel pump noise and wiring!!

Hey Brett,
I've decided to start out with a mech pump to keep things simple (I'm starting a appreciate simple more and more!). I'm looking to buy a mech pump next weekend.

Couple of quick questions, is the Holley 170GPH HP available locally or did u have to import it from Summit? So this one comes with -8 fittings standard and doesn't require a reg?

Have you got it running on your beast yet?

Cheers
Marty

Hey Marty,

These pumps are readily available in Australia... I ordered mine from my local speed parts supplier down here in Vic, and had it within a day or two. You could try Rocket Industries, I know they can get them easily too, as should any decent supplier. Of course, you could still import one & probably save even more cash, if you can be bothered!

Yep, the HP series one comes standard with -8 inlet and -8 outlet AN style fittings, and does not require a reg, it's preset at 7.5PSI.

You can get the next model down (still 170GPH, but not the HP series), which is heaps cheaper again, but does require a reg. This pump has -10 inlet, -8 outlet.

Either way, with these pumps, it's essential you have a good feed line (-8 all the way, including the pickup), they need the volume. I imagine if someone tried to run one with a standard size fuel line, it wouldn't keep up.

I haven't got mine on and running yet.... I've entered Springnats in late Nov, and haven't had the spare time to play around yet. I'm still wondering if I should have a crack at fitting it and modifying my whole fuel system, otherwise I'll just have to wait until December sometime.

PS. Totally agree on your comment - I too appreciate 'simple' things more and more these days. That's the whole reason for me fitting this pump too...

Oh yeah, before I forget, you'll need a good pushrod for it too.... I ordered the one that Struggler recommended... the ARP light-weight one, from memory chrome moly.

Good luck, and keep us posted!! I will post up as soon as mine is fitted and running.

Thanks for all the info mate! I'll be running -8 all the way, I need to look into getting my pickup modified, I'm running a drop tank that takes a stock torry 5/16 pickup/sender. There's a place called motorsport connections close to me that has been recommended by a new people on here, I'll start with them and hopefully they can sell me everything or atleast point me in the right direction.

I'll price up the 170+reg and the 170 HP and see how much difference there is and decide from there.

What are you running in the way of a filter? I'm thinking about going with one of the big old school white oil filter looking ones to keep with the old school theme. They're probably shit by todays standards tho?

I'm looking to upgrade my fuel filter too, that's another reason why I'm holding off from fitting the new pump.

At the moment, I'm just using a cheap Marine style water-separating filter (same shape and style as a typical spin-on oil filter, yep very 'old-school'). To be honest, I have no idea if this is a good filter or not though, and I have no idea on the flow figures or how fine they filter too etc...

I like the look of the System-1 fuel filters, their filtration and flow figures are great, and the prices aren't as bad as some of the other big brands. And of course, these filters are standard with AN style fittings too. So if I do it right, my entire fuel system from front to rear should have Speed Flow fittings, without a single hose clamp in sight! That's the end plan anyway.

Let me know what you decide to use for a fuel filter.

It took me a while to get off my ass, but I've made a little progress with my fuel system.
I ended up going for the old Holley 110GPH unit. It's not very exciting, but it's got everything i want;

3/8NPT fittings (-8 equivalent)
6vane
non-regulated
affordable - $150

I spoke to my engine builder and he said he ran the same pump on my motor when it was in his HQ (did 12.0@113), so I'm sure it's up to it. Holley have a calculation in their catalog which claims that my motor - ~450hp only requires 40gph for a mechanical. So if that is correct, 110gph is plenty overkill.

I went out and got all the pumbing to run my motor in. I got a braided rail hit for my carb, NPT to AN adaptors for the pump and braided line and speedflow fittings from the pump to carb. I also got a little inline fuel guage for the rail so i can keep an eye on things. And for now to run it in, i just got one of the speedflow push-on fittings and a meter of hose to drop into a jerry can so i can run it in.

I'm still deciding whether to run the good stuff all the way to the tank. I've still got to work out my pickup and filter so i've got a bit of time to think about it.

Looks pretty cool if you ask me

I still gotta fit my pump up.

Cheers
Marty

How sweet does that look Marty!!!!! Exactly the same rail/gauge setup I've bought too, I reckon it's looks mint. I am about to start my fuel system too.

Yeh it looks wicked! I'm just spewing that I won't get my big filter under my A9X scoop. The carb is tuned to this motor with a 2" open spacer (I've only got a 1" in the pic), and there's already no chance it will fit.

I'm riding out to pick up my fuel pump and oil pressure guage today

I'm on a mission to get this thing ready to run in!

Cheers
Marty
