ok well after getting my UC front crossmember reconditioned its time to start putting it back together and fitting it to my car... my question is what would be a good starting point of the ammount of shims to put in the upper control arms? is there any sort of standard ammount or will it differ from car to car?
Thanks

Are the springs standard height or lowered? Did you put the fat washers ( about 12 MM thick from memory ) back on the bolts where the shims go? There are a million other questions I could ask, but here's a starting point.
No fat washers:
Std height springs: ( 6 ) 1/8" shims on all four bolts
2" lowered: ( 3 ) 1/8" shims on all four bolts.
If the washers are installed on the bolts, subtract the width of the washers from the thickness of the shim stack.
If the washers are 1/2" thick and you have standard height springs, instead of using ( 6 ) 1/8" shims ( 3/4" of shims ), use only ( 2 ) 1/8" shims. With the thickness of the washer, it gives you the same 3/4" spacing.

Handy info Chopper - thanks.
Another handy hint with these shims and spacers - CSM here in QLD sell Stainless steel shims and spacers for the 70's holden front ends I'm gonna get some of those next time I am out there.

BEFORE ANYBODY ASKS:
Just remember, what I posted is merely a GUIDE for an INITIAL setting. A full wheel alignment is still required. The shims should be available new at Repco and Bursons. I personally won't be using any shims on the race car, I have another plan...
