No. Over the years, I have thrown out thousands of batteries. Many of which were original GMH batteries. All of which I could've had for free. If only I had known...

I have a Supercrank... or is it Supercharge....still going after 8 years in one UC. might have got lucky with the quality here.
My other UCs get about 3 years out of "name" brand ones.
Regarding CCA and RC ratings, a higher cca is generally matched by a higher RC, though its worth checking these closely if looking at batteries other than lead/acid batteries.
RC= reserve capacity = no. mins the battery can provide a current of 25A before dropping below 10.5V. This is probably of most interest to those running their stereos with the engine off, however, the test is rather one dimensional as it doesnt give an indication of the battery's ability to provide a large current to start the car when it is 5/6 drained etc.

Yes, the battery world can seem a very complicated matter and the quality of specific brands will vary depending on what year and what plant the company is actually producing batteries at the time, as in Century/Yuasa.

Two battery companies joined to create this; Yuasa is a Japanese company and supplies original equipment, and up until a decade ago the quality was second to none.

GNB Batteries started its life as Chloride Batteries then went to Dunlop Batteries and then went to GNB Batteries which incorporates some of the brands mentioned, ie Marshall, Massie, Bosch, Delco, Beaurepaires, and again the quality tends to come and go on whatever plant is manufacturing at that one time. GNB Batteries, when it was owned by Pacific Dunlop, had a fairly high quality as they had 2 plants operating, one in SA and one in VIC. They were also OE (original equipment) suppliers for the majority of manufacturers in Australia. They were also employed to supply industrial use batteries, as in submarines and the mining industry.

Unfortunately, the automotive market is a bit of a hit and miss thing. As far as CCAs and reserve capacities are concerned, in automotive use you should be more concerned in CCAs as in the starting power and you'll find the reserve capacities will be higher in deep cycle use as in secondary power, ie caravans and campers. That's enough of a rave from me!

The dry cell or gel cell battery can be mounted on its side or even upside down if necessary.

No they cannot.
On their side yes, but NEVER mount a battery upside down. Even GEL batteries have pressure relief vents, as do the VRLA batteries (Valve Regulated Lead Acid)
The SLA (or Sealed Lead Acid) is different tho, they have NO relief vents, and are not suitable for vehicles anyway, so should not be considered in this application.
If you want the best battery, try the N70GEL battery from HAZE. Not widely known about, but certainly the best for a reason.
Probably the most popular in motorsport is the Odyssey, which I also use in my cars. Compact, and heaps of grunt. They have been getting a bit of a bad rep lately, and that mostly comes down to the importer, they can be very difficult to deal with.
Another good battery now avail is the ALCO battery, made by First National, arguably the worlds largest battery manufacturer. You'll be seeing moore of this brand battery in the coming years, as I believe they'll take over the market quite strongly, with a good reputation too.
As for a trickle charger, I use the Jaycar 350mA SLA charger with 100% success rate, and at $30 its good value too.

I see a shit load of Odessey batteries in race cars out at the track. I myself have used Odessey batteries in the Hatch when I was drag racing and in the daily driver (VQ Statesman). Both batteries started failing around the same time (around 2 years, just wont hold carge after recharging) well below what the life expectancy was for these expensive batteries. The place I sourced a replacement battery from used to be an agent for Odessey but stopped dealing with them due to too many warenty claims and they had too many problems dealing with the Odessey contact which was greatly affecting their name as a battery retailer. They did say they were a great battery if you got a good one unfortunatly the failer rate was too high for their liking.
I have not herd any bad stories about Optima batteries and have also seen quite a few in race cars recently.
