I'm looking for a ignition system for my mild 400 chev, and shouldnt see any more than 5,000RPM. I came across this on ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com....1QQcmdZViewItem

Would anyone recommend this setup, i would be willing to spend UP TO $500.

Thanks
Damien

for starters the ebay add is misleading as the set up is not an "msd 6al", its a cheap copy, and you get what you pay for ;)

I wouldn't recommend this set up .

If your looking for a reliable electronic dissy for a mild engine that's not going to get revved 6000rpm then I'd recommend a factory hei dissy, they come with the coil in the cap and require only one posative wire attached to hook them up (plus another wire for a tacho if your running one :D )

very simple and very reliable set up, I've used heaps of them, they are cheap too, about $100 to $150 for a complete secondhand dissy with the cap.

only issue may be space in the engine bay up against the fire wall if its in a torana, if its in a HQ then there's no problem with room :spoton:

So just to clear things up, we are talking about this item.

http://cgi.ebay.com....1QQcmdZViewItem

There were other "HEI" dissys on there for <$100 new, some labled 'Procomp' others just 'HEI' but looked almost exactly the same!

<edit> HQ, lots of room :).

<edit2> or this seems to be the same as above but cheaper ?!?

yes thats the type I mean, I'm not sure how good either of those 2 you've found on ebay are, if they are what they claim to be then then I can't see a problem.

I usually just get a secondhand one from one of the American importers :D

yeah i've heard some bad remarks about procomp

basicaly, only run brand name gear if you wanna get serious. persoaly i only use msd gear, but craine fireball stuff is supposed to be ok

msd gear may be expensive, but you will only buy it once.

ProCRAP ignition systems/components should not be touched unless you wear heat proof gloves because you'll get burnt.

As MYLJ suggests std Hei is good or even the crane gear is good also.

Purely out of curiousity, does anyone know what ProForm (not procomp) ignition stuff is like. Rocket industries sell it, so I'm guessing it can't be too terrible!!

Thanks,

Dave
