Yep, anything from VC right through to VL Commdores I believe (V8 of course, and make sure it's a factory Bosch dizzy). As rodomo said, also WB.

You will also need the HEI coil to replace your old coil, and the module too.

You may need to change your leads, depends what cap/rotor button you use. If you want to keep your standard cap and leads, simply fit a rotor button from a Ford from memory (someone else will hopefully confirm this).

This is how I'm doing this exact same conversion on my 253 in my hatchback.

The module is fitted to the hei dizzy.......usually considered part of the dizzy.....but worth checking its not missing!

Pretty hard to miss as the module is sandwiched between the cover and the dissy body.

Spoke to the guys at the local Auto One shop, were I get my parts from and they said they can get a kit to convert to an electronic ignition system. It comes with a new dissy ,new coil and new leads etc for $249. With this at least Ive got some where to take it back to if any problems and can get spares if need be. They didn`t me the brand though. Cheers Steve.

My personal choice would be genuine. It is a very durable set up and parts will be available for a long time I would think. There have been a few threads about some after market dissy set ups, might pay you to have a look at some of those threads and see which ones others think are good or bad?

Hi Guys.

There is an electronic dissy on the market currently that is a replica of the Holden/Bosch HEI unit. It uses the same replacement parts etc. & already comes with the small cap & matching rotor. It is probably the one at Auto One that steve253 is referring to. At $249 (including coil) it is a good buy.

When you consider that a 2nd hand one is over 20 years old. Then you have to buy a new coil, cap, rotor & probably a new module, the 2nd hand one is not such a cheap buy. Also there is no warranty on the 2nd hand one.

Dr Terry.

That sounds like the go, I wouldn't mind looking at one of these, provided it's up to the same quality as the orginal units.

Hi Mick.

Yes, they are pretty good. AFAIK the guy who has them made, used to work for Bosch, then left after they closed their Melbourne factory & then set up his own business to make a lot of stuff that Bosch could no longer supply.

If you need one, or need any info, give me a ring at work.

i hear that if you go the small cap option you can't use the hi energy coils that the elec dissys come out with - due to danger of crossfiring.

True or false?

its a possibility, however, the chance of a crossfire across the cap with a high energy coil will only increase only if the plug gap is also increased........which is one reason that using a higher energy coil is considered desirable.

I would think this crossfiring (if that is the reason for the big cap) would be proportional to maximum static and mechanical advance. If the compression ratio is lifted that would allow for less advance? and perhaps the crossfiring wouldn't occur?

I could be wrong but I seem to remember another thread on this ages ago.
Again I could be wrong but I think XD? XE? V8 had a similar bosch/fairchild ignition distributor that had a small cap from factory and I think that is the rotor button Rory is refering to?

yeah i uave heard that you risk the chance of x-firing if you go to the small cam and rotor.

the big cap fits in my lh, it's just a bit hard to do the dizzy lock down nut but other than that it's fine...........
