There was as article in the Herald Sun Friday about a fellow in Tooradin who has approached the council to open a 1 klm runway on his property for drag racing. The idea is so the "Hoons" in the south east of Melb. have somewhere closer than Calder.

Drags all the way home on the freeway???????

Hoons set to take off legallyMatt Doran

May 04, 2007 12:00am

ILLEGAL street racers in Melbourne's south may soon get the chance to legally burn rubber . . . on a 1km long runway.

To try to get doughnut screeching hoons off the streets, about 5000 residents of the cities of Casey and Greater Dandenong are backing a bid to turn a Tooradin airfield runway over to drag racers.
Cranbourne car enthusiast Rick Langoor, who came up with the idea, said: "This is absolutely a safety issue."

"I am totally in support of legislation against hoons but what we really need is a safe, legal venue in the south that will prevent dangerous racing on the streets," he said.

Tooradin airfield owner Greg Morrison said he would put the idea to Casey Council soon.

"I have a 1000m runway that would be perfect. I would need to construct some safety barriers and barricades but otherwise it would be perfect," he said.

Mr Morrison said he also planned to create an advanced driving school and motorcycle track.

Cranbourne Labor MP Jude Perera said the "exciting" plan could be a "big tourism winner".

"The introduction of a legal drag racing venue would also go a long way in alleviating hoon driving and illegal drag racing in the Casey," Mr Perera said in a recent letter to councillors.

Sen-Sgt Bruce Kitchen, of Cranbourne police, said he would back any safe plan to reduce illegal street racing in the area.

   Sounds good.

The Toorak runway idea Sounds good. Specialy considering on my one and only visit to Calder it took me 1 1/2 hours on a friday nite to get there from Narre Warren. Toorak would be a much more accessible, but there may be other things to contend with, such as noise, smoke etc.

I believe the problem with Sandown is due to residents complaining about the noise.

Well you buy a house near a race track, what do you expect.... :fool:

I like the idea of the Tooradin runway too. It makes good sense... Offer the revheads an outlet... otherwise put up with street racing... in my opinion the council's/government are silly if they don't push hard to make these sort of things happen. Fingers crossed.

How long does it take to get to Tooradin from the outer Eastern suburbs of Melb?

That's the kind of initiative the Government needs to be promoting.

I was going to put a post up about this a month ago as my brother found out about the proposal a while ago through a mate of his, the owner of the runway said he is more than happy to get it ready and open the track once a month at frist then if it gets busy enough he will open it more, i haven't heard any more but if i do i will post it in this thread.

Sorry 73LJ but I had to have a laugh at the Toorak reference (no offense mate!!) I could just visualise the Porsche drivers and blonde haired posers being totally dumbfounded by a pack or screaming V8's thundering down Chapel street on a Friday night..... the things that make me laugh (small things/small minds as they say).....

Definately a big plus for Cranny if this thing gets off the ground. Was down there at xmas and Cranbourne Park SC seemed to be bogan central so there would be plently of spectators as well as participants. Not too much of a hike from the SE Melb suburbs as well. Man, could almost be a motorsport mecca. Phillip Is just down the road (well sort off), and isnt there a speedway circuit around those parts as well (Nyora)?.

Hmmmmm?????
If that runway is 1 klm long, a nice little circuit could also be built around it too????

Circuts and drag strips dont mix. Refer calder and eastern creek. Keep them separate.

Forget it guy's it's not going ahead as the Casey council didn't approve it, although they said if there is enough signed partitions they will consider it. The partitions to sign are at various mechanic's work shops in Hallam and surounding area's.

Do you mean don't use the drag strip as part of a circuit?
I meant to build a circuit "around" the strip but leave the strip on its own.
If you meant the 2 shouldn't be at the same venue at all, why not?
Just curious now.

i think what LX406 was aying do not let the two be one ie use the dragstrip as the main straight. one party will lose out when shit hits the fan. ie Eastern Creek. Not sure on the story behind calder.

hope this clarifies some issues.

yeah the front staight of a circut is no good as a drag strip because drag strips need the concrete barriers right next to the racing surface. Also dragstips put down VHT compound to improve traction. This adverseley effects the circut guys traction, especially in the wet.
