....Oops should've taken more notice on the old forum-- anyway-- quick question for a mate. Whats the best budget-arse 'braking combo' for getting engineers of your back when fitting an 8 to a lJ? (in the form of HQ/WB upgrade) I remember there being something about particular stubs to get, swapping from l to r etc..a basic parts list would be great.

Thanks all

Apparently you can fit LH-X brakes onto an LJ
You can also fit HQ onto a LH-X
So in theory you can fit HQ onto an LJ

hi everyone :D

im just about to do the hq up grade on my lj and just wanted to know if
u have to swap the stub axles over from right to left side etc like the lh-uc or right side stays on the right etc??
Which hq calipers do i get the iorn or alloy ones???
Do i need the hq backing plate as well??
Will the hq stub axles affect the ride hight in anyway??

G'day Danny, I can't remember if the calipers are better to go to the front or back on an LC when you do the swap - as you will have the springs out anyway, you can just set it all up on the car, then turn the wheel throught the steering travel and run the suspension up and down in every combo - if everything clears then it will be fine.
I know the LX's must have the caliper out front.
I have seen the iron HQ type and the later alloy type on LC's - I seem to remember having seen them both in front of and behind the front wheels on different cars but that doesn't mean they cleared everything properly.

The HQ to HZ stub axle will give you a 1" drop in ride height in the front.

There are no backing plates on the HQies - I don't know why the Torana ones had them either.

The LC/LJ steering arms will cause bumpsteer with the HQ stubs, the same as on the LX. Try a set of UC steering arms as you may get those for $5 but I recon (haven't actually tried though) you should have the A9X type from Harrops to best fix the bumpsteer on the LC/J's as well. The cheaper option may be the UC arms with a bumpsteer adjustement setup on them.

There is also a difference in the KPI between the torana and HQ stub axles but I can't rememebr which one runs more - anyone remember? This does have an effect on how heavy the steering will be.

I just checked out an LC front end really closely today and the steering arms are a lot flatter than LX ones when viewed from the side - I would actually start with an LH/LX steering arm when using the HZ stubs, not the A9X or UC ones I said above.

I fitted the brake setup from a HZ with the calipers fitted to the rear, the caliper wouldn't fit on the front side without hitting the upper control arm.
