in the mean time, have a couple of questions about some of the parts on the car to work out if there original or not.....first the head has the following numbers on it
2815843 C233 9 H
the photo below is of a tag that the guy who sold it to me found in a box of spares when he bought it.... he had bugger all knowledge of xu1's and simply bought it to make some money on..... any ideas of where this tag is from or what it is off ?
It came with a bunch of crap in the boot, various bits and pieces,,,,so may also post up some pictures of them to help with identification... another stupid question but did this model come out with seat belts in the back ?
Once I get some decent photos I will throw em up and let you guys nit pick a bit further.....want to get her as original as possible so all help and advice will be greatly appreciated........ thanks..,

HiAll black fuel cap no! no emblem . but this is a very debatably subject
Probably the most debated aspect concerning XU-1s is "what is the correct cap?". There are quite a number of publicity and period shots and of the XU-1 having a plain black cap. The parts catalogues support this also.
There is anecdotal evidence that suggests that a lot of dealers, salesmen and potential customers didn't like the black cap and swapped it for the "Lion" GTR cap.
In the final analysis - does it really matter?

To answer the carby question, LJ XU-1s were fitted with 3 x Zenith-Stromberg 175 CD2-S carbies, yours look correct from this distance. You are correct about the air cleaners, they are not the right ones. 2 other things that are relatively easy to fix are the correct oil cap and the cast iron (big nut) brake master cylinder.

And at t the risk of stating the obvious - the fuel lines have been modified. Repro parts are available from Brad Merrick.
Were you lucky enough to score the correct distributor and radiator?

Hi Guys.orange leans are right for lj, lc are clear.
lion cap for gtr and xu-1, only plain black for bathurst models.
Just to confirm what others have said, the amber front blinker lenses were not introduced in the LJ series, until very late 1972 for the upcoming '73 ADRs. It's easy to check if you car should have them or not. If the parking lights are with the blinkers, the lenses should be clear/white, if the parkers are in the headlights, the lenses should be amber.
AFAIK ALL XU-1s from the very early (August 1970) versions have the all black fuel cap from the factory, with no emblem. Dealers often fitted the chrome GTR item (either locking or standard) on request.
I find it difficult to believe LoneOranger's claim of the plain black steering wheel centre cap in a '72 GTR. I was working in a GM-H dealership at the time & clearly remember the first time that I sighted a plain horn cap was in an LH SL/R in March '74. The reason for their introduction was so that they didn't need to make a dozen different badges for the centre cap. They had already made GTS, GTR, SS and Sandman. If it continued they would've had to make SL/R & G-Pak etc as well as the fact that the HQ GTS & SS badges were of a different shape & style (lettering font) to the upcoming HJ GTS or LX SS. It also allowed them to make the wheel available as an genuine accessory on any model. Previously, if you wanted a sports steering wheel on say a Premier, a Kingswood or a Torana SL, it had to come with a GTS (or other incorrect) badge.
