rodomo an RACV man tried to tell me once that my car wouldnt start becouse i didnt have any water in my overflow bottle in my VN..lol I new what the problem was but i wanted to get a free tow home with my brothers total car policy..lol

I can tell you it wasnt cos it was low on water..On another count I had a mechanic fit my V6 to my VN cos was i sick at the time and mum needed the car, got the replacment motor from pickapart.. Anyway he fits it and calls me tellin me the motor is buggerd and to get another, said the valves are all stuck open and hasnt got no compression due to that.. After checkin why it wouldnt start i found that the coil pack he used was numberd wrong(after market) and all that was wrong was fireing order..Go figure

You 2 sound like you know what your on about but dont let that fool you, alot of shonky RACV dudes out there and as for holden machanics i new a 3rd year apprentic at ralph Desilver Holden who got me to help him change ball joints in his VH commodore cos he didnt no how to

Not many guys like you 2 that are truely real machanics out there

10. If it is an auto...try moving gear lever slowly through D N R N D N R( back and forth)as you try to crank the engine...sometimes the inhibitor switch wont work when in P or N....but may work just either side of this spot. (N)

hey guys and girls, good news it is going again.....moving it through the gears as i try to crank it fixed it....it started somewhere inbetween D and N......

now the next problem, there is a knocking comming from the engine it is noticable when it idles but not when i rev....because of the exhaust i probably cant hear it

what shoud i check to fix the knocking,

also my sump has been pushed up and dented a bit (no leaks tho)...this happend when it was in a accident and ran over the median strip....could the dented sump cause any problems?

Sounds like you crashed it hard, make sure it has oil pressure but it sounds like you shouldnt be running it to long or at all, does it have oil pressure & does the radiator still have water in it.Im assuming you want it running so that you can check it or sell it.If you dented the sump bad enough it wont be able to get oil pressure if the oil pick-up is damaged also.

Well there you go...one of the first simple tests we do ( why ? its a common thing...)

re knocking noise...the boys above have answered that...

Glad we could help.

How much ??
Maybe get one from a wrecker or a performance workshop, they may have fitted a winged sump and may have an old one lying about.

Can be replaced without engine removal...very hard but. Seen it done on a 2 poster hoist once.

Btw ..VS> V6 have done these heaps of times....rear main oil leak repairs <_<

As for the sump, mine is slightly dented in the center (at plug) but does not hit the oil pickup, no drama's, no knocks and I have adequate oilflow topside across the valvetrain.
For you to dent that section to hit conrods you'd completely bend the pickup and the pan wouldn't even resemble a sump anymore, I would think :)

As for pulling it off without removing the motor, it's supposedly doable by lifting the engine up in the bay slightly (I have a feeling only with a factory setup combination)

With my Turbo350 behind the 308 I could not remove the sump pan past the flywheel with the engine lifted, it was impossible, fortunately I was able to fix what I had to with the room I had.

If in doubt, remove and fix it before it causes more expensive problems.
