Eg. HT prefixed engine Numbers were from LX Toranas, any other models also ?
Once the list is complete I reckon it would make a good sticky ... Maybe one for 6's and one for 8's.

Engine No. VB 50#### (6 digits).
The casting on front of the motor looks sorta like "8 ISLA", where the 8 looks more like a flat screw shape metal dag than a figure as such??
Any help appreciated ...

4.9litre A9L (man) p/n. 92026253 if that helps.
Also cast numbers should read;
day of month= 1 to 31
month of year= A to L (in place of 1 to 12, skip I as not to confuse with number 1)
year= 1 thru to 0 (end of year number)
For example if yours was 15L8 then i would say
15th of december 1978, 1988 or 1998, but VK never produced in any of those years.
other tell tale signs for correct year are CID cast on side, Gear box choice and valley casting etc.

Does the VB mean HDT optioned ?
Do the 4.9 still have 4 inch bores? Can no doubt be stroked as easily as the next Holden motor ...
Might go get a photo of the castings. It is in a HQ Ute at moment so gearbox wont help ID much extra ... What does CID stand for ?

Engine prefix VB 4.9litre V5H p/n. 92026253
which is high performance engine which is 304 cid bore 4.00in x stroke 3.02
I believe these motors were fitted to VK HDT group three SS with large valves etc to be homologated to bathurst 84.
Engine was painted black.
CID = the engine size cast on the side of the block.

So if I can get this one that has been freshly reconditioned for about a grand it should be OK value?
Included is a 465 holley, no name intake manifold, non elect dizzy, fan to flywheel basically ...

I am not saying that this motor is as holden fitted to SS and chasers but thats what the VB engine number prefix is pointing to. Correct cast date would reveal more.
Original motor would have been fitted with Rochester, Brock type inlet, large valve pollution cyl heads and electronic ignition.

What does A9L stand for in human terms, similar to L34 I am suspecting?

Stocko manifold I am also presuming ...

And now the heads, correct casting for B Cast heads?

Maybe replace the 465 with the quaddy in a month or so, then if it doesnt perform near the old motor, probably then put another cam in (Crane 286) and then do the intake manifold swap.
I prob shouldn't have started THIS THREAD and asked in here ...

Just to clear any confusion, this block would have been painted black from the factory, fitted with everything bar rollers, never thought they had the H/D rods tho.Oh A9L is another code same as L34 bar the rollers etc but i believe this motor to be V5H the hot blue version for brock and the chassers but without the H/D rods like A9L/L34.
Also thought standard 308/304 code was L31.
did you get the head part nos. yet?
Prolly looking for 92029003

Am getting the engine painted Holden red as it is curently a poxy blue colour, not the Holden blue or even Ford blue. Not sure what the guy was thinking when he painted it, must have had some blue left in the shed at the time !!!
