Gday all, I'm hoping some one can help me out. LH 253. Ive been burning points out about every 4 weeks for a while now. Ive changed the condensor, coil and points, all new. I got talking to the mechanic that works on the trucks at work. He asked me if the coil that Im using has USE WITH RESISTER stamped on it. As he said a resistered coil will only put 8V to the points and a non resistered coil will put 12V to the points and burn them out. I have know idea on what I should be using and wether I am using the right one.The one on the car has nothing writen on it. How do I find out wich is the right one to use and is this right about the voltage to the points. All help welcome. Cheers STEVE. :furious:

easy...if you have points you need a ballast resistor and a coil marked "use with resistor"

with a multimeter put neg probe on battery negative, pos probe on coil positive and you should be getting about 9 volts.

Put pos probe on coil negative and wind engine over by hand and tell us what you get.

If you live near Lisarow i can give you a coil.

It "should" be a resistance wire...but I don't have a diagram.

So one of the 2 wires to the positive on the coil is the resistor.

on the pos side of coil...one wire ballast wire (9V)...other is ignition wire (only has power when cranking)

Sounds to me like maybe it used to have HEI dizzy in it and someone put a normal points dizzy in it.

If you were to be out for a drive on saturday arvo and passed Lisarow I could put you on the road to recovery.
