Hi all.
Still trying to work out the origins of my car, but chassis number CLX043770M is definitely LX yeah? Cheers.

Provided it's the original tag, yes.

..and the original stamping in the engine bay near the driver's headlight (this should match the compliance plate on the driver's side (same number).

thats a LX chassis number, just a few questions about the actual body can tell us what it is without looking at the chassis number.

where do the rear seatbelts mount, through the c pillar or the parcel shelf?

My mate has an early model LX SLR 5000, where the seatbelts are mounted to the pillar, just like on my LH.

FYI

CLX should be a '77 model. Check that the build year on your other tags match up.

cheers, I thought that may be the case.

if his chassis number was ALX.... it could have the pillar mount seatbelts.

there are a couple of sheet metal differences between LH and LX but I would assume the early LX's would be the same as the LH's

Thanx guys.
The number i posted was actually the chassis number from the chassis itself near the radiator. Not the comp plate. Those plates are different so Im just trying to work out what the actual body of the car is. The seatbelts mount to the pillar (see photo) and it has the 4 pedals (see photo) I always thought this was an LH thing? Or is it both? Perhaps its an early LX body?

My comp plates are for a 11-76 LX with a BLXO chassis number, so would that match up to the body do you think, if the chassis number near the radiator had perhaps been changed at some time? Or is it all too dodgey?

Im really just wondering if even though this body has an LX chassis number is it an LH or early LX around 76? Cheers for the info.

LH and LX all had the foot park brake... (What were they thinking!)

If yours has Pillar mounted seatbelts and a CLX chassis number, something a bit dodgy going on there.

It says BLX on that plate you showed us...

Is the car currently registered? Or has in been registered in the past? Check old rego stickers or something...

If your intention is to just get it registered and on the road... There are ways around it... If its a wizz bang SLR5000 or something i would be a bit worried...

Cheers.
yeah its not a wizz bang SLR 5000 or anything so not overly stressed. Just trying to work it out.
It has BLX on the chassis (comp plate) number but CLX on the chassis (rail) number and pillar mounted seatbelts. Bit odd huh?

Thinkin I might get a cheap LX and move all the good bits across to make a real LX as the body is pretty rusty anyway.

Would a BLX chassis number be early enough to still have the rear belts mounted on the pillar or had they moved to the parcel shelf by then? Im talking november 1976... Cheers.

I was under the impression that rear retractable seat belts were an option in the LX, not standard fitment?

Ah hadnt heard that one. Could well be true. I was told LH was pillar and LX was parcel but you might be right. No doubt an SLR would be optioned with retractable belts on the parcel shelf though yeah? Anyone?

I have personally never seen rear retractable seats originally in a torana... Not saying it wasnt done. But i have never actually heard about them before...

Do the numbers corresponding t othe CLX and BLX match?

ie, one is BLX12345, and the other is CLX12345?

*Ignore me.... i just read through all the posts again... *

Woodgrain dash wasn't available on LX.
Mine is BLX, Sept 76 and parcel shelf mounted seatbelts.

Looks like an LH shell, Chassis # restamped and dodgy tags.....

Grant..

Thanks guys. thats the conclusion I have come to too! I think its about 5 cars joined together! Time to move on! :gun: I just wanted to make sure it was definitely an LH and all the knowledgible torana scholars on this brilliant site have shown me the way. Im just gunna find a decent LX shell and move all the good bits across so everything is as it should be!
Ie. (from what I have learnt here):
PARCEL SHELF MOUNTED BELTS
YELLOW NEEDLE SLR DASH
COLUMN MOUNTED HEADLIGHT DIPPERS
SMOOTH SHEET METAL INSIDE THE BOOTS/TAILIGHTS AREA
SILVER FASCIA

Anything i missed?

Anyone got a half decent but cheap LX shell in Melbs?

Cheers.

14 years ago i had a 7/77 SLR, i was the second owner. The rear seat belts were on the parcel shelf & they were retractable belts.

Retractable rear belts were not an option on LH or LX
BLX is way too late for belts on the pillar the fact it has CLX chassis number and BLX compliance number should ring alarm bells, add that third element of the belts and you have a mess on your hands. Pillar belts were LH shells only. Yes early LX had it, but they were left over shells from LH. Don't go on dashes and things, people change them all the time.
LH had dark woodgrain, LX was lighter, silver dashes only came in LX SLR and SS.

Did the LH or LX come with inertia reel seat belts for the front seats?
