Hi Mark.

VIN matches body number so thats okay.

Ask for all the numbers on the body identification plate. Thats the plate on the passenger side.

Trim No: 1886-67V Brown vinyl.

Ask for the number stamped into right hand frame member assembly. Thats right near the cannister in the engine bay, often this nees the dirt wiped away to see number.

That number should match the number on the saftey compliance plate on the drivers side.

let us know how you go.

I'll be pissed if it isnt what its supposed to be, but might be able
to do a better deal..........

What should I be looking for to confirm it is a 6 cylinder SS?

Cheers, Leakey

Wow, great info GML-31,

Now the only one missing is my bloody one!!!!!!!!!!!

That would be SS 3300.

I am guessing, going by the SLR numbers being all the same for all engines
that I need to look for 8VD77 on the plate somewhere.

Sound right?

Thanks again guys.

Mark check the "Body Identification Plate" that is the plate on the passenger side. For your SS Model should read: 8VD77

Original engine prefix for the six cylinder SS "HL" followed by engine number.

I would post all the numbers here.

Good luck, but most important check all those numbers before handing over the cash.

Leakey, you also need to be aware of the possibility of the middle VIN plate and the body identification (Options) plate coming off another car. If this was the case then the chassiss number on the body will still match the one on the safety compliance plate. Therefore make sure that the engine and model year codes on the VIN tag match with the year of manufacture on the safety compliance tag and the body options tag.
Cheers

Thanks Gaz, but I've booked the flights.

I see her on Friday morning. (the owner)

Even though she's rough, (the car, not the owner)
I think the asking price is OK.

If not a genuine SS, if it has the right bits, I will
still grab it, hopefully for a bit less and dump that
V8 in to it, rather than restoring it to factory.

Thanks for your help mate.

Thanks Toranavista, great advice.

I am really looking forward to posting some pics.

As I mentioned in the last post, she's a real roughy,
but if genuine, I think a great restoration project.

If not what she claims to be, then the project will
take on a different flavour, V8 etc.

Thanks for your advice again.

In front of where it has "8VD69" etc. it will say LH8VD69 for LH or LX8VD69 for LX.

also says it in the body no. ex. ALH ****** M or ALX ****** M.

Regards Anthony.

On the old website there was a thread which analysed the VIN and showed what each code meant. Does anyone still have this info?

It depicted what was the model, body, motor, place of manufacture, production number etc... Anyone? Maybe there should be a sticky somewhere or a tech page explaining fully how to intrepret the VIN and corresponding ID plates

The centre VIN plate should start with: 8D77L...

8 is for Holden vehicle.
D is trim code, SS for hatch or SL/R for sedan.
- C is SL and B is for S.
77 is body code hatch, 69 is sedan.
L is for 3.3 L20 engine.
- Z is 5.0 L34 not offered on LX.
- T is 5.0 L31 also used for road version of A9X.
- R is 4.2 L32
- D is 2.8 LD# not offered on SS.

The next letter will be the model year code.
- D for 74.
- E for 75, not sure after that.

The rest of the number is to do with the assembly line and vehicle id, J4 is in Melbourne and the H at the end also indicates a Melbourne car.

Just thought get some other peoples theorys on this...
Here are the numbers on my Body ID Tag...

Model - LH8VD69
Body No. - 426199M
Trim - 1869-12X
Paint - 567-15336

L32 M20 GU7

VIN Tag....

8D69RDJ426199H

Complience Tag....

4-74 ALH 002758 M

But my Chassis Number Is......

ALH 002788.

Now my mate tells me that the original paint is a silver colour and i can see the original paint in some spots where the new paint has come off.

And he tells me that the interior is the light blue colour, which is what i have and its in perfect nick.

All the slr gear is on the car as well and still has the original engine (although i have my mates 253 in it at the moment cause the original is stuffed) original M20 trans and 2.78 banjo diff. So i think the car is a full original slr.

Judging by the chassis number i reckon the car was built at about may/june 74 not march 74 and someone changed the saftey complience plate with one that says it was built in march.

Whats everyone else think about this? i was really worried at first when i noticed the numbers were different but then with a bit of research i came up with the answer that just the safety plate has been changed.

Regards Anthony. :furious:

Hi Anthony

Your Paint is Sable Metallic. Your interior is Ash vinyl with cloth inserts.

Saftey compliance plate on the drivers side you have posted this ALH 002758 M & you have put your chassis number as ALH 002788, I think you will find if you double check the vehicle serial number stamped into frame assembly near the cannister, you will find that your vehicle numbers all check out.

Get a rag & a little degreaser & wipe over that stamped number you will find you have nothing to worry about.

Your cars numbers certainly say LH SLR 4.2 V8. Have you some pictures you can show us?

Thanks for the info slr 5000,

so is the sable metallic a silver colour?
and the ash vinyl blue? and yes mine does have the cloth inserts.

ill go have another look at those numbers to double check, but ive had the paint over the chassis number sanded back and i was pretty sure that i was right on the numbers.

its funny cause the numbers are so close and similar (only 30 cars away) but ill go have another look and get back to ya.

Thanks for your help.

G'day guys, writing from Adelaide!!

All number checked out, especially 8VD77.

As a bonus, the under dash air conditioning I thought the car
had turns out to be 'dare I say it' factory plumbed through the
existing vents. The fan switch and sliders have additional settings, like
those shown on REDA9X's scans.

All original interior. Factory demister, both mirrors, factory electric arial.

Man am I stoked!!!

Thank you all for your help in verifying this is the real deal.

- I would probably have bought it anyway, even if it wasnt a real SS.

Cant wait to get her home to Sydney and get cracking.

Rust in C pillars is baaaaaad. But not unsavable!

Cheers, Leakey :D
