Gday All...
Thinking of fitting a Gilmer Drive to my V8..
Does anyone have it fitted and what do you think ??
Does the sound drive you nuts after a while or is it still enjoyable??
Guessing the mechanical fan will have to go?
Looking at ebay and the ones on there are going for $170..sound reasonable or is there a better place to get them ??
Any help is greatly appreciated !!
Cheers

had to take them off two of our cars as the gear on the alternator is an under drive and didn't charge the battery.

Hi TOrana..
Not quite sure what you mean ??
I thought from the look of the Gilmer Drive belt it would just spin the alternator just the same as your normal V-drive Belt?

Different size pulley I think she means ;)

But that would only apply to that specific kit, not Gilmer Belt Drives in general.

the ones on ebay are under drived, smaller crank pulley then factory and larger alternator pulley then factory,

they sound pretty cool, i think iv heard some people using injected v8 alternators which may charge well with less spin??? would have to look into it

You should get 2WILD to count his teeth and compare...find it hard to think someone would make a copy with less teeth...just a thought.

Good Thinking rorym..
2wild4u could you possibly have a look at your drive gear and let me know how many teeth on each piece so I can compare?
By the way where are"diecrest eng." located? and how much did your one cost, if you don't mind the enquiry?
Cheers

They can apparently be modified to reduce the noise, or so i'me told.

I've got them, i love the noise.

Yeah drill holes and stop the air from being forced out, in turn making that noise. Defeats half the purpose :P

the tighter you have the belt the more noise they make and the shorter amount of time the alt and waterpump bearings last! thats said, I am fitting the diecrest ones to my car, Diecrest is only just down the road from my place.
I am also part way through making my own gilmer drive for something to do

^ lol why? I can understand making a gilmer belt drive setup for something to do or even just so you know you've actually built another aspect of your car from scratch. But the expense of materials and time taken to make the setup would make it worse value for someone buying a one-off one when aftermarket setups are availible. That is assuming that everything is perfectly machined and true as well, although Cohen is probably pretty capable with that kind of stuff.

I forgot to mention that drilling out the gilmer pulleys to get rid of the sound also increases the belt life hugely (as does the lower tension as Makka almost pointed out), but I still don't think it's worth it.

Makka, PM sent.

I had a genuine Gilmer brand one on my 308 and i loved it. It did run very hot (but it was a high comp engine), maybe it was underdriving it, don't know. I wouldn't mind getting one for my 350. I'm swapping my 308 gilmer set for a VC SLE this week :D

Thanks to all who have responded...
Heres the latest..
Have been watching 3 mobs on ebay selling them..
Atracing , Direct engine parts , Diecrest.
Atracing vary from $150-$285
DEP $170-$250
Diecrest $120-$192
All for a similar product.
Anyone had dealings with these companys and drives ?
Dircrest has one listed starting at $85 ,I am assuming that is diecrest eng. as stated earlier in on the topic.
What do they sell for in the shop , I wonder?
It appears if you are patient enough you can pick one up pretty cheap.
Thats the hardest thing though isn't it the patience bit ???
Where's Santa when you need him ??
Cheers

I should have added this yesterday.

The ex pres of our club has a gilmer type set up on his LH.
He was telling me there are 2 sizes of belts availiable.
The shorter belt is too small for his car, so he had to go for the longer belt.
Then he had to fabricate an idler pulley to take up the slack.

I dont fully understand this. I would have thought somebody makes a belt to suit?

I have the 'Gilmer' set up, it doesn't require an extra roller. Looks very neat.
Can anyone shed light on this?

DEP are different co. I am told who sourced ATs suppliers...and they are pissed off about it.

Cool,

I am guessing your Pres bought a non powersteering kit...then had to get the longer belt and pulley to fit it all....there are 2 types...P/S and non P/S

noise is only noticeable inside the car at low speed, once reasonably mobile I dont hear it :(

Not sure how it will go heat wise with the 355 stroker, if the car overheats it will have to go - only time will tell!

AT Racing type

Direct Engine Parts

Diecrest

As you can see the AT racing type and the Direct Engine parts types are the same, they should drive the water pump and alternator at about the same speed, the diecrest one is underdriven by heaps.

I bought one from AT racing, looks fine, belt looks pretty cheap quality though, shouldnt be too much of an issue though as there isnt much load from the water pump and alternator.

That is not underdriven...
Look at the pulleys. Both crank and waterpump are the same size.= 1:1
Diecrest Eng made the drysump mandrel and hub for my race car. FAULTLESS....
Buy DIECREST.
The other mob sells junk.
Both of the other mobs.
Cheers Greg..
