I was buying some bits the other day from some one off Egay, I didn't know this guy from a bar of soap..total stranger.

Once we had finised our tranaction the guy asked me if I wanted to see his cobra..
I of course said yes and he took me up the drive way to his garage and showed me his "4 door XC cobra".
My first thouht was, this guy is mental, he doesn't know who I am or what I am likely to do..
My second thought was is there such a thing as a 4 door cobra?

He told me that there was only 3 of them made, either 2 auto and one manual or two man one auto. His one is Manual.
It looked the part had all the bells and wistles on it that a Cobra would have. He also said that his one was the lead/pace car at bathurst that year according to the previous owner( he said 1971, but I didn't want to correct him on the fact that XC's weren't around then, but he could just be confussed about the date)

Has any one ever heard of a 4 door cobra?
And would anyone else show their pride and joy off to a stranger like this?

I've seen stacks of 4 door cobras, but I've always asumed that its just crappy replicas. My mate used to have an XF Cobra too :spoton:

With the showing cars thing I've found that people often show me their cars when I go to buy stuff and I often show people mine. If I don't like the look/sound of someone than I wont. I've never had a problem in 7 years of being addicted to torries. I am getting more and more wary over time though, now that parts are becoming unoptainable and the prices of parts on ebay etc.

Cheers
Marty

All Cobras were 2 doors, though at the time there was promo utes, sedans and a Van, none were factory jobs.

Saw a couple of these for sale after the release of the 2 door Cobra in Sth. Aust. Stopped at Stillwell Ford one day to have a look at one. The salesman came up to me and started to try to sell me this "genuine" 4 door Cobra. I let him go just to see how convincing he was. When he was finished I told him I had heard that Stillwell Ford had made a number of 4 door replicas cashing in on the 2 door success.
The salesman said nothing and walked away.

The Cobra was a marketing Idea to help sell the last of the hardtops so all of them were 2 door.

All Cobra's wore a numbered badge on the (glove box? )if memory serves me correctly, anything without the genuine numbered badge is a replica, I have seen many 4 door replica Cobra's over the years. And as stated above they were all 2 doors.

I used to work with a guy in the 80's that had a four door XC Cobra.
Car was correct in every way, including build numbers etc.

I believe it was the real deal.........

Either way, I still preferred the LX I had back then. :D

Was that the Bill Bourk Special???

Dont know about four door Cobras, but re teh showing cars thing, i went around to this blokes place one day to buy some torry bits off him. Naturaly took my thing around, and i went under his house and there were a couple of burnt out old EH's sitting under there, nothing to special. After talking for a while he asked me if i wanted to see his XA GT. Naturaly i said yes, and we walk out the back and he rolls up the shed door and sure enough, there it was. Bloody beautiful. It was in the middle bay. A perfect XC ambulance was sitting in the other bay, and the last remaining bay of his three bay shed had the biggest collection of signage, magazines and model cars i have ever seen. A real eye opener.

Some guys are just to lenient on what they show people. Mind i have told people about it but never told anyone where he is, not even the suburb.

Cheers.

While it is true to say that today the XA/XB/XC hardtops are classically desirable cars, at the time they proved to be hard sales for Ford, as the Australian motorist has always preferred four door cars to coupes, even when it is a high performance car.

Feeling decidedly average now.

This was my understanding too, but not being a ford Expert I didn't want to question him. Because you always hear of one off and limited number fatory cars Example.... the two door XW GT mentioned above and the big block XY GT made for the CEO of Ford Aust the GMPA A9X's And the XU2's...

But the main thing is.. He loves it, it looks good and its got all the good gear in it too (351,top loader and 9 inch)
Good on him :spoton: I don't think he paid a fortune for it... $14,000 he told me..

There is a Falcon Cobra club, just like the A9X club so asking them before you buy would be a good idea.Like the A9X lots of things unique to that car.I still reckon the only genuine Cobras are 2 door.
I would own one..lol.

As for the paint being unique there was a mustang Cobra in the USA with similar stripes.

No factory XC Cobra Sedans period. What the dealers did to move cars is another story entirely, but none come out of Broadmeadows.

I saw one in Sydney about 15 years ago, I think it was green with a gold GT stripe down the side.... It was along time ago, but it was a two door. The only time I've ever seen one.
What are they known as in the States? Are they still called XW Falcons or do they have a different name?

It is surprising that not so many of these are in Australia, you certainly don't see many at car shows.

As for a 4-door Cobra, wasn't it just a couple of blue stripes and some blue seat trim anyway? Except for the first 30 coupes, aren't the rest of them only an emissions strangled marketing exercise. :tease:

There were no 4 door Cobras.

The first 30 has Scheel front seats and were black.

The rear tubs were moved in about 25mm to give more clearance for rear wheels and seam was notably different.

There was an idler arm bracket and a few other minor changes as well.
There was a transmission cooler with electric pump, thermo fans and a few other bits to help with racing like spoilers etc.

It was basically a marketing exercise to get rid of the last coupe shells therefore no 4 doors were made from factory along with getting some mods to help with racing.

Nah they are just a 'Falcon', no prefixes, just years. A friend of mine has one with a 351/C4/9", LHD too!

Hi fellas. Firstly I'm a Ford fan, but a lover of anything with chrome bumper bars. I own an XB coupe with a 460BB and low rise dual quads. I also own a genuine dealer delivered Bib Stillwell XC 4 door Cobra. Now the history about these is not clear due to Stillwells documentation being thrown out after 7years. From what we can find there were actually 12-15 cars produced and you could start with what ever type of car and running gear you wanted. (eg Falcon 500, Fairmont, 302, 351, auto, manual). I do know for a fact that Ford never built a 4door production cobra, so really there are no genuine 4door cobras. My car started life as a Falc 500, 302, 4spd, disc brake borgy diff. A twin headlight grill, sports dash, GXL st wheel, GXL petrol cap, black vinyl interior with blue cobra fabric inserts, boot and bonnet spoiler, ( I believe no front spoilers were fitted to 4doors as they realised the trouble the coupe boys had with clearance.), were all installed on car at some stage. I don't know if any of this was ordered from stillwell or if he had this installed himself. A front spoiler was added to mine later in life.

The 1 thing that my car has that I have never seen before on another 4door cobra, is a badge on the glove box lid that has B.S.S. COBRA ingraved in it. I am unable to track down the name of the original purchaser but know its' history after that. My car also featured in the year 2000 news letter for the Australian Cobra Club.

Personally I have shown my car to other ebay people, but because no-one knows of them I think they think I'm off with the pixies.

At the end of the day I don't care if it's real or not as I don't see any value in paying $90 000- $120 000 for a dirty old Falcon. My Cobra is still better than owning a Daewoo. (Datsun 120y is better than a Daewoo)

Hope I could supply a bit more info for us muscle car lovers.

I'm a huge Ford fan and own a BSS 4door Cobra, and I reckon you hit it on the head. The only thing racey about a Cobra is the Carol Shelby blue stripes.
