Lads. I'm changing the cam in my 186. When I put the new cam in what's the go with making sure it's lined up correctly? Apparently there are two dots/marks that have to line up. I'm trying to get as much info as I can so I can smash it after work. A tutorial perhaps?

Cheers
Jim

Honestly you cant stuff it up in a 6. (unless you do what I have just done and fit the wrong cam to a 202...it doesn't turn very far before the rod bolt smacks the cam)

pull dissy and fuel pump
Pull the rockers and pushrods
pull the side plates and lifters
pull the harmonic balancer and timing cover (sump off first)
rotate engine until dots line up.
undo cam retaining screws
pull cam out carefully (dont stuff your cam bearings with the lobes)

Are you fitting the old cam gear to the new cam?

Heat cam gear in hot oil (or water..but oil wont cause rust)
press gear off (careful of cam thrust plate)
Heat cam gear again
press onto new cam (dont forget thrust plate..very embarassing)
insert cam and line up dots

Assembly is the reverse of disassembly (der!)

You are an absolute champion. I think a 2 beer job, and maybe a rum and then maybe a few more beers and then......

And make sure you have top dead centre compression, i.e. one complete revolution of the crank from the dots clockwise, dunno why, just the way it is. If you move the crank more while putting it together, just make sure both valves are closed on No. 1 cylinder and No. 1 cylinder at top of the stroke before ya put the dizzy in and your rocker cover on, or on sixes you can cheat, the front side cover plate (make sure both lifters are down and piston up).

Didn't know that when did my first one, and got these really neat flames out the top of the carby when we tried to fire her up. Had to go back to basics to sort out what was going on.

remember to grease your lifters, perhaps go and get some anti pump up ones, andput some locktight on the cam gear retaining screws.

i bet you could do it with your eyes closed

DO NOT use normal HTB grease on lifters or the camshaft.

Use only a molybdenum disulfide grease or a quality assembly lube such as Royal Purple or Redline.
