i am just in the stage of fitting a thermo fan and it seems the el, ef, au... ford thermo fans are the way to go. how hard are they to fit? does anyone have any pictures of some fitted? or should i just chuck a 16 inch thermo on?

the AU fans are the way to go (the el are slightly better apparently but are harder / more expensive to get and repair)

I've got a set of AU fans on the big block and would recommend them to anyone and everyone :D :D

best set up I've used so far.
Very easy to fit , I made some small angle brackets to atatch it to the sides of the raidiator were the factory fan shroud use to mount (trimmed the plastic down a bit on the shrouding for a snug fit) make sure you wiring is up to the task as they pull plenty of amps! :spoton:

yeah, that topic has all the good oil. Just a few things to add, I had to trip a bit of the lip in the engine bay in my LH to fit them in because they were a few mm to wide. Also, don't know if this was talked about but because of the configuration of the radiator and the fans they have to be mounted upside down otherwise the bottom rad hose is trying to come out in the middle of a fan. So just invert and trim the shroud.

I just fitted some 3mm aluminium angle 20mm high along both sides and used the original holes in the rad and drilled through the al, attaching with a couple of bolts. Holds good o.

Cheers,

thanks for the info, liam would you have any pics of your thermos, they would be a big help if you could, or anyone else for that matter

i also forgot, i got a price to buy a new el thermo fan, $220 bucks, is this about right, it sounded pretty cheap to me for brand new ones

I think you can find AU Thermos for $160-$200 and that's why they're so popular. Apparantly there are some good prices on eBay frequently.

Without really knowing I think ef/el fans are the same as au but yeah, just get the AU ones anyway and like has been said, ebay is the go. They are not genuine Ford gear but the same sort of thing you would get from Repco, asian import probably.

I actually forgot to take photo's of my setup, I was running to a pretty tight schedule, but there are plenty of good pics in the other topic dattoman made a link for.

Cheers,

Havent heard any reports about the longetivity of the lowerprice replacement fans. The original thermo(prefer to call them electric) fans fitted to the Fords were Bosch, dont know if that is still the case.
