just wire the relay that drives the fan from the positive if your coil.
Your fan will only run when your ignition is on, no more flat battery. Also ive added a light ( fused as well ) in the Fan Circuit on the Relay Contact Neg that i run into the cabin of the car and is cable tied around my temp guage, so i can see when the fan is running. All works great.

ie Control: Pos Coil/Fuse/Thermo Switch Contacts ( craig davies )/Relay Coil Pos/Relay Coil Neg/Car Body

ie Fan: Alternator or Battery Pos/Fuse/Relay Contact Pos/Relay Contact Neg/Car Body

Agree with thermo syphoning, but it's still no competition for the water pump. I think you'll find the older motors also had more open area and minimal restrictions to allow thermo syphoning to occur, the ole 308's are pretty restricted in terms of open area between the heads and the block.

I used to find that the thermo's would run on for 7 minutes if you just turned the car off with the relay switch powered by constant power. You could halve this by starting the car and getting the chilled water from the radiator into the motor after 3 minutes. Either way, it took a toll on the battery. Old battery seems to have recovered from the ordeal now.

The overheat problem turned out not to be an overheat problem, of all things, a loose connection on the coil, which is probably the spikes on the last dyno printout. Funny how I questioned my own work, before questioning that of the Autoelec. Much nicer now, just waiting for the webby to post up the new sheets.

For what it's worth my fans (which work fine) are fitted front side of the radiator and not where the old fan used to be :)

Make sense?

I have mine fitted behind the rad, the car is factory air, so the factory thermo fan is already on the front right hand side & not enough room to fit the aftermarket one beside it.
So i put the aftermarket one on the left side, behind.
Now when i put the air on, i get full rad cover.
Just my 2 cents worth.

There are fasteners available that are entirely made of plastic (a bit like zip ties) for mounting coolers or fans to the radiator, to describe them:

A straight thin rod of plastic with cones all the way down the rod, a round clip is pushed onto the rod and tightens up when it goes past each of the cones (like the lines on a zip/cable tie).

Put simply, go to Autobarn (Or whoever), ask for a thermo fan mounting kit.
Comes with 4 ties & all needed bits and pieces.

Youd need to have at least a high powered 16inch fan VN commodore style fan to replace the clutch fan you have taken out.... in order for you aircon to get anywhere near the performance the manufacturer intended.
