Ok, so i know that the first ks that go on an engine are crucial to how well it gets run in, rings bedding in etc. My engine is getting a hone and new rings, and hardened valve seats as we speak. The thing is i dont want to get it all going again just to glaze the bores up.
My engine builder has told me not to use triples on a fresh engine as it is too much fuel and will just glaze the bores up again, he suggested a 350 holley.

The thing is, if you have to start running it in from the word go, how do you go about tuning the it? Obviously its gonna take a bit of idling etc to get it running right, but i dont want to do the wrong thing to it, the same goes with timing, do you just HAVE to get it all right first go?
I know how to run in an engine, what im worried about is just getting it running right as soon as possible so as not to have any bad effect on the engine.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Iwould have thought the Holley would be a bigger fuel leak than the triples (assuming that are variable venturi type like SU's), that accelerator pump just hoses in the fuel.

he he...holley 350...less fuel..what about a single strommy

I wouldn't worry too much....ignition timing and go....as long as it runs and drives.

your right howard, they are SUs. what i was trying to say was that i was just worried about getting everything right first go, so i dont have to stuff around and have the engine idling for longer than it should, ie, just get out and drive it and run it in.

i might just try leaning out the triples a little if he thinks thered be too much fuel..

A1...As I said on saturday...dont be afraid to punch it every now and then in the first 1000ks...the stress rips the rings into the bore and clears the glaze..Do NOT be too gentle with it...thats the worst thing you can do. Howard?

Does it have a big cam?
If so i would avoid low rpm's. (But not over rev it either)
You need fuel to feed big cams at low rpm to keep them running.

Great link jap-xu1, thanks for that. A few of my mates have broken their engines in pretty hard, and it's returned great results for them, both in terms of power and reliability. I will be also taking this approach with my current 383 rebuild as soon as it's finished. I babied it the first time & suffered ring problems, oil consumption etc, but not this time!

One of my mates in particular broke his engine in circuit racing - it is one of the most potent little engines ever!

The only problem for me will be finding good roads to be able to do this!!

At 400klms the XU1 V8 was running up Noosa Hilclimb at up to 5000rpm...I think I bedded the rings ok..?... :tease: The initial dyno run says it is running NICE numbers...I am happy.

I have no doubt that if you didn't bed the rings in properly, you'll know all about it soon enough.

a few years ago (try 20) when i was bike racing the fastest and most reliable bikes were the ones I gave a caning to out of the box. My mates with all the troubles and slow bikes always pampered them. I would give them 15-20 mins varying the rev-range then straight into it.

yeh thanks guys,

i think that ill just throw it all back together, and off i go, ill give it a bit, load it up, and certainly not baby it. problem was last time that the carbs werent tuned and i think it just idled too much before i got any ks on it. shouldnt be a problem this time though.

I remember reading another similar web page that suggested filling the engine and radiator with hot water and turn the key and go hard.

I am working up the courage to give it a go on the UC...whenever that day comes.

I'll be playing it safe and running mine in on a dyno.
