The engine in my new UC is a biggy..its 210....that is a 186 with a 3.25 inch stroke and a 3.705 inch (186 + 0.80) bore.
I didn't think they would go that big...its the biggest bore I have seen in a red 6..has anyone had any bigger?

Nearest thing you'll get to water cooled pistons! Its not pinging, its the cylinder walls rattling!

I'm not really worried...I think I am selling the car to an apprentice at work (subject to whether anyone really wants to buy the engine) I need it to be reliable and legal..hence the reason why the Holley is going bye bye to be replaced by a stock UC single strommy and ULP converted head.

i have a question....why take a 186 block and put a 202 crank in there??? why not just use a 202??? did you get the mains journals on the crank ground down to fit in the block or did you line bore the block out to fit the crank??? i personaly woudl have ground the journals down, smaller bearing = more power....

That was three questions, not one. :D It sounds like he bought the car with the engine already modified. Some people like to modify small motors for rego or insurance reasons.

Valid questions considering it is an ex QLD car and they had to go to the trouble of getting the mod plate done for the 186 to go in..if they had bored a 202 80 thou they would not of had to worry about changing it.

I asked the exact same questions of the bloke I bought it off..but he was only going on hearsay. As far as I can tell it was the crank that was ground.

He is a mechanic and got it when another bloke couldn't pay his bill.

I shall make my post a bit clearer. MAYBE the 186 was modified when in a vehicle that had a 186 from the factory. Easier to rego and insure a car that has the engine size it originally came out with. That was the point I was trying to make in my previous post. I apologise for any confusion I caused in the last 30 years.

...which is how minor car repairs turn into full on re-builds.

If you have the block x-rayed and sonic tested, you can tell whether it can take an 80thou bore.
I think the 179/186's are more likely to accept this.
You also need to make sure that the bores are dead vertical and centred.

But saying this, at 80thou, you only need the engine to hiccup once and the bore wall will peel back like cellophane.

210s were very common in the 80's, but either bad experiences or more interest in V8s has seen them disappear.

Grant..
