Hi,

Was just wondering if there would be any issues using the small type oil filters as used on vn v8's on a Holden 6? I think they are the same thread pattern etc?

Or would bigger be better?

Smaller is fine I believe. They definately fit on.

I use the smaller filter on my 308 due to not having enough room, but have been advised that the larger filter is better as it will filter the oil better.

Some people have told me that the small filters help with getting oil pressure quicker as it doesn't take long for them to fill up.

I am sure someone can give a technical answer, but I would imagine the small filter would be ok depending on engine condition, if its a older engine and dirties the oil alot quicker, you might want to go for the big filter?

Don't the small ones have an anti-drain back valve, which the larger type doesn't?

BCR42Y is correct. I've never heard about an anti drain back valve in a Holden 6 oil filter. Or any oil filter for that matter.

I thought they all had anti drain back these days. Look at the small holes around the larger one, is there a flap under the holes? This stops oil going back from where it came.

Never botherd to look. I slip a bit of old oil on the seal when I install them and chuck them when I remove them.

Did the Google search thing, check here

What is an anti drain back valve?

It stops oil from draining out of filter and oil galleries when the engine is shut down and aids quick flow of oil to engine on start up. Not all filters require anti drain back valve due to the construction of the engine.

FWIK Z30's don't have this feature, but the small VN type do.

Yep, lots of filters now have the anti drain back feature advertised on them. I don't see where it would be an issue myself. The last of the Holden V8's have the smaller filter, and the A9X had a smaller filter than the normal 308's of the time. I don't see it would make much difference on the six. For the record, the 202 and the 308 both had the PF10 filter fitted from the factory anyway, so no difference in threads

I had a problem in my FC (149 Red) whereby it would have a pronounced rumble on startup for about 5 seconds or so, obviously because it sits for long periods without use.

This is why I investigated an alternate filter, and now use the VN type which fixed the issue - which I'm guessing was the oil draining back from the filter to the sump and the oil pump getting air pockets.

The absence of an anti-syphon valve for a required application will result in delayed oil flow to the engine upon startup.
This effect, often referred to as dry start causes abrasive wear and bearing damage. Repeated delays in oil flow to the vehicles engine, can ultimately result in engine replacement.

Thanks UC Hatch, this extract from your link seems to prove this is correct.

So the VN filter is the same as the 202 then? Is there much price difference?

price difference? doubt it.. few $$$ if that maybe.. I'm only using it to free up a bit more space to make the bay look a bit cleaner.. Will be used behind a turbo 202.

Oh dear Rodomo, does that mean your social status doesn't allow you to go into cheaper stores and that you would prefer to pay a much higher price for the same part at Autobarn or Repco? :tease:

I'm not a tight ass, I can't see the point of putting on an expensive oil filter that is going to do, EXACTLY the same job anyway.

I've never had an oil filter fail on me, so I'm not too fussed about brand. Especially since I used to change the oil and filter every six weeks ( 10,000 KM ) on the Econovan. They were never on there long enough to cause problems.

Are K&N oil filters worth the extra money? The bloke that done all the machining for my engine recomends them and I have one on my 6 at the moment but they are very expensive. If they are better, I have no issue in running K&N but if they are no different to say a ryco, I would rather use Ryco.

Re the oil preasure issue, I went from the Z30 to the smaller one (z129?) to try and get the oil preasue a bit higher, but didn't see any difference.

I would rather run the larger filter, cause i feel it would not clog as fast as the smaller filter.

Steve, the smaller filter won't increase your oil pressure. What it should do ( in theory ) is get the motor up to normal pressure quicker. You are correct about the larger filter not clogging as fast as the smaller one. Which is the same reason I wear large undies.
