ok,i have a new l76 6l crate engine in the workshop, and as my engine bay has already been painted,i'm not overly keen to start trial fitting things.

what are the best engine mounts and sump to use?

engine mounts crs Vs cae?

camaro sump Vs sheet metal?

i need bolt in minimal in car fabrication :tease:

the pipes will be made by a race car fabricator off a dummy car that he has (he's 4 hours away from me so i cant use that car for trial fitting)

engine will be backed by a glide if that makes any difference :fool:

Hi, Launch and I both have ls1's he went auto I went manual. We both used CAE engine mounts. Worked perfectly.
I went Camaro sump and modified the X member. I bit of work involved
Launch went CAE sump slight mod to x member (TAP TAP). No work involved. Bolt on, drop the engine in. That easy.
I wish I had gone that way.
PM me if you want more info
cheers

i have a lx ls1 sump and have no need for it. I bought a ls1 which was sitting in a lx hatch. It looks like a truck sump with the bottom cut off.

I spoke to High Energy Sumps a few days ago. They are waiting for some new sumps from the States. They been having problems with used sumps and welding them.

I'm not having much luck with one for my lc.

Colin or anyone else.

Have you looked at this sump yet?

Oil Pan

I reckon this one would probably drop straight into any torana...

^ The LH8 oil pan is 3.5" deep at the front. The Camaro LS1 oil pan is 1.25" deep at the front and just clears the LX steering rack.

LX hatch I have gone T56 and have had it modified to suit the torana without any cutting so it fits the orginal hole, as the commodore setup was way to long. I'll let you know in a week or so when it returns. I can't wait!!!

don't think it will fit. Look like to will hit the xmember on the top. I think the rear would fit in.

I will post some pics of my engine and the xmember and show you why

LJ383, this is a Gen3 with a with sump from a LX. The pan has to be flat intil it passing the xmember on a lc. See how it curves before the xmember

^^ LS1 Camaro pan modified to suit LX will hold around 6 litres. In my opinion the pickup should be further back in the pan.

6.5L actually before it gets anywhere near the windage tray.

Pickup is exactly where the camaro sits, only mod was I cut the pickup screen and rotated 90 degrees so it didn't hit the pan.

The standard Camaro pickup position is roughly in the middle of the front baffled section of the sump.

Once you cut an inch or more off the front off the sump to clear the crossmember the pickup ends up at the front of the sump in a small baffled area.

I'm selling the one on ebay.

I have choosen another path for an oil system, but thats costing a lot more $$ then $200.

If you want to know how to spend your money on an alternative route PM me and I'll show you how to blow $3000 getting oil pumping thru your engine.

I've found this link to sump measurements & part numbers.

I'm converting an 81 F body Pontiac to LS2 & auto & a LX sedan to LS2 & 6sp

http://www.ls1tech.c...ad.php?t=817787

Hope it helps

I have three oil pans to suit the LS1 in an LX.

Modified Camaro. Sand cast aluminium
The Camaro requires significant modification to fit the LX.
http://ls2lxhatch.com/engine.htm

Canton 13-274A. Fabricated aluminium sheet
I have trial fitted the Canton 13-274A with CRS mounts and found it needs about 10 mm shaved off the bottom to clear the steering rack. When fitted with CAE mounts no modifications are required. Note: The CRS mounts are around 10 mm lower than the CAE mounts.
http://ls2lxhatch.com/canton.htm

Moroso 20140. Pressed steel sheet
The Moroso 20140 has a little more clearance in all the right places so it should fit with the CRS mounts and will definitely fit with the CAE mounts.

You have certainly done a lot of trial work so far, Thanks for the pictures.

Have you seen or tried the LH8 sump, It appears a bit deeper at the rear & reasonably shallow at the front of the pan.

Interesting air cond braket & compressor, is it the OEM Sanden compressor or after market unit ??

At this stage I'm going to purchase 2 new 2008 CTS-V Cadillac sumps & pickups etc etc, it seems it will fit the F body pontiac & appear to need very little mods for the Torana, although after your pics the LH8 sump maybe closer for the Torana.

Thanks ls2hatch
Craig

The Camaro oil pan is a good reference for checking measurements. The sump in the Camaro pan is 5" deep, in my LX it is flush with the bottom of the K-frame using CRS mounts. I have been told the LH8 is 7" deep which means it will be 2" below the K-frame. You can see the comparison here.

The Camaro oil pan is 1 3/8" deep at the front, this gives about 10 mm clearance with CRS mounts and around 20 mm with CAE mounts. The LH8 is 3.5" deep at the front so it will require significant modification. Once you have cut the front of the pan the pickup will also require modification to fit in the front of the pan.

The CTS-V pan looks like it is more difficult to modify for the LX than a Camaro oil pan. It is 2" deep at the front vs 1 3/8" for the Camaro. This means it will not clear the steering rack with CRS mounts and clearance would be down to around 5 mm with the CAE mounts. The NCOP specifies a minimum of 10 mm clearance. The sump area would need to be cut back the same as the Camaro.

Once you have cut back the sump area on the Camaro sump you need to move the pickup back so it is centre or rear of centre of the remaining sump. In this picture the standard Camaro pickup has been moved about 50 mm back, I think it could do with being moved a little bit further which may also require a brace. Instead of purchasing and modifying the Camaro pickup the Moroso 24050 pickup may be an off the shelf option, I plan to check this next time I pull the engine. You will also need to fabricate an oil control plate similar to the one in this picture preferably with a baffle and trap door similar to the Moroso and Canton pans.

The Moroso 20140 or the Canton are better options. If you want a sump that bolts to the transmission then the Camaro or the 2007 Monaro would be my choice.

The A/C compressor on my engine is a Sanden 508.
