Cops can pull you over for any reason. Most designs affect the operation of the sunvisor, making them illegal. If you decide to use one, they need to be padded anywhere that the body could come into contact with it. No sharp edges, long bolts poking through etc. Make sure you check with the local rego mob first. Regs are always being changed.

I beleive in NSW 1/2 cage is legal (if you do what chopper said) but full cage are not.

They restrict vision and passenger exit.

If it restricts entry/exit, or if it restricts vision at all, NO, not legal.
Some states allow them if you can comply with the above, but not all. Check with your local rego authorities.

Half cage is legal in NSW with an Engineers Certificate, either front or back, as FastEH said.
In Vic I believe it is considered a safety improvement and can lower your rego/insurance costs? Can someone confirm that?

Grant..

in nsw there is a code of practice for roll cage construction.
you must follow its guidelines and you will have no problem

Have rang transport S.A bout five times regardin this.
Five different answers each time
Last one i got was "has to be 150mm behind occupants head, fully padded and only a four point half cage. This along with an engineers report will most probably get you legal registation"
That was for my hatch and i had to take out the back seats. It would only be registerd as a two seat car.
Bit of a joke

Dont know anything about the legalities, but thought Id throw in a few thoughts anyway:

Is there really room in a torry for a roll cage. Im "only" 185cm and my head scrapes the roof and cant see anything if I put the sunvisors down, never mind some tubes in the way.
Yes they would help in a roll over and side impacts, but my thoughts would be one would really need to wear a crash helmet all the time, as the possibility of hitting one's head on on the tubes(padded or not) would be high in most collisions and possibly should be wearing a full harness as well.

Interestingly, one road safety expert was quoted as "that there is one simple measure that could be made that would reduce the road toll by up to 90%, helmets for all occupants".

What about Victoria? Ive seen it, but there would be so many things for the cop to get you on, 1. Passenger exits 2. Vision 3. Padding etc, but hey, if you do need a rollcage for your "Superfast street legal car" You'll have a defect anyway :P
