Heres a question...which one is toughest?..M21/22 Muncie? Toploader?..Super T10?
Are T10s different to Super T10?..guessing yes..found a T10 out of 64 Mustang..
All opinions appreciated.

I'm no expert, but, they say the Top Loader is 'bulletproof'.

Hi Guys.

Here's how it goes, shoot me down, if you want to.

The best GM 4-speed manual up to the mid 70s, was the Muncie fine spline.

The best Ford 4-speed 'box was the Toploader.

There was also the Borg Warner T10, which was used in many US 'Muscle Cars' of the 60s & 70s.

When GM & Borg Warner merged & made the 'Super T10', this was the best.

In my opinion the strongest US 4-speed manual of the era, was the BW Super T10. All the racecars, including Group C Falcons in the late 70s /early 80s used this box, even Dick Johnson's XD/XE.

toploaders are strong, but dont shift with big hp, a number of friends have had them unless you have dog box conversion and a bit of blueprinting there just trouble. magnesium cased super t10, there sick, shifts awesome, strong can handle big hp, they have big input, output and countershaft shafts, and pretty light.
even the early t10`s were a good gearbox, parts are available.

Howard runs a Jerico off memory...but if you are looking for value for $ it does appear the toploader is the pick...then a Super T10 if you can get one under $3000 or so.

rory i have a 64 mustang t10 in my hj monaro, its a cast iron housing and has been fitted with many super t10 internals, but still has the small layshaft and splines. i had trouble with jumping out of 3+4 but it was because of the wrong selector key pad. it is a great gearbox when warm, the hurst indy is superfast and doesnt miss shift. also i had a toploader close ratio + hurst indy in my l34 and it was way slower and not as precise as the t10. as for strength i never broke either. i have put a full rebuilt m21 back in the l34. full circle...

Super T10 and then the Muncie. Bob Jane used a big block Muncie in his ZL-1 Camaro. He did have to cheat a bit to strengthen it up but it was a 7litre 600ft-lb or so torque engine. Standard top loaders will bust behind a 400hp small block, whereas a Standard Muncie will last. Toploaders can be modified to make them last though.

I vote Super T10. These boxes were designed for cars, toploaders were designed for trucks and shift accordingly.

Supra boxes are the strongest and there is 2 types of Celica box, a steel case and an aluminium case one.

Here's a funny story about Muncies and Toploaders. My mate had a Muncie in his HK Monaro for 15 years behind a 400hp 350. He gave it a flogging. Blew up heaps of Saginaws and 10-bolts before putting the Muncie and 9" in. Blew the guts out of 3 or 4 9" diffs before putting a mini-spool in, and it then lasted the 15 years. In the end he got scared of breaking the Muncie and put a toploader conversion in. Blew up 3 of these, all rebuilt as new. One was a GTHO box. It's still got a top loader in it as it doesn't get driven much anymore. And the same Muncie that copped 15 years of abuse is now in a WB 1-tonner behind an injected 308, and has been for about 5 years now. Gets used for towing all the time and is still going strong.

rory i dont think you could fully super t10 a early t10 as you you would have to do a lot of machining to make it fit. i pretty sure the layshaft is 1/4 inch bigger in st10 so to bore the cluster and housing to suit wouldnt be viable, what mine has is s t10 1st, 2nd, 3rd gears and selecting hubs ,torrington roller bearings between each gear fitted but the rest is standard t10. also the bevel on the gears are a bit staighter on the s t10 witch gives it the "muncie whine" saginaws are a bugger because when you change gears to fast and big revs they keep breaking circlips between 2nd and 3rd
