I know it's not a torana, but it's car related and it's my current project.

I thought I'd post this up as I was talking about building these cars for a kids camp.

There's this amazing kids camp that sees about 250 kids attend for the whole week. This year theme is like the wacky races and they need some character cars (4) that are able to drive and carry adult weight.

Well, I was chatting with camp director and we talked about the cars that they are using for the drama at camp. He was going to use billy carts and he wanted me to motorize them.

I had a better idea. Scrap the billy karts and modify kids electric cars. At first I was going to use 49cc 2 stroke engines, but due to being a petrol engine you can't really use the cars indoors and the whole legal thing.

So electric it is. These cars will be modified to be used by the adult drama team.

I found a great web forum that deals with making these cars go hard using scooter motors. You know the one that granny uses around the mall.

Here's the plan. All cars will get the following

-36v motor chain driven
-36v controller. (enables soft start)
-Hall affect pedal
-3 x 12v 12ah gel type batteries
-Any other bling to ad character
-Rear drum brake
-Ignition key to prevent kids taking the cars

Here's the 4 cars so far.

I was given this car the other day. I haven't touch this one yet.

This car has some great lines to it, but I'm yet to start on this one.

I've got stuck into this car already. I've stretched the body, braced up the chassis and replace the axles and wheels with beafier items.

This car is mega cool. With an engine that revs and shakes just like a real V8. I've got stuck into this one already. The great thing about this car is that it already has a steel chassis and chain driven elctric motor and drum brakes. Here's some pictures.

I've done heaps more to this car, but I run out of light. I need to spray paint all the bits that i have welded and start wiring up the new engine and batteries.

The chassis for the VW. We had a test drive tonight and it flys.

Before you ask, it does wheelie. I'm just waiting for the body to get repaired and painted.

I will do. I have super charged both my kids car already. One i have gone for 6 volts to 12 volts and the other from 12 volts to 18 volts. Here's a video of our 2 year girl on the 12 volt ninja turtle.

They go okay I guess. You can screw on an old push bike tire, but then the sudden launch will destroy the plastic gear box.

If you ever look into getting a car for a kid make sure it's 12 volts and it's twin motor. The little single motor 6 volt isn't much chop.

Ans yes mitch, our little girl is a natural. She loves it and runs straight to the car every chance she gets. I've caught her standing on the bonnet of our son's jeep while he was driving around the yard.

It's funny when friends drop by with their kids that have no idea how to drive. Straight into everything in sight.

It's the only time I think about taking pictures.....

I try and do a stage by stage picture for the next car.

Just a minor update. My mate has finished the panel beating and I put the shell on for a trial run. Looks pretty cool I think.

The VW shell is now at the spray painters getting it's paint work done.

I think this car will make a very cool pit car. So you scoot around to the loo or the tucker shop.

I was thinking about a soft cover so you can't see all the batteries and the motor.

Finally some paint on the VW and it's almost done. I had to change all the wheel bearings after 2 collapsed. Cheap and nasty bearings were replaced with better brand. I also replaced the bolts that hold the 2 hubs together.

The next step is some bumpers and a wheelie bar. The car flips if you lean back too much. I will also get some trim made to cover the ugly inner bits.

2 cars to go...

Car number 3 is almost done. I had the first test drive tonight and my wife came home to find me on the road.

We clocked the car at 20 klm/h. This car almost turns on itself. I made sure that car would have an excellent turning circle.

Needs a few more final touches, but all good so far.
I'm starting on car 4 tomorrow and I have also started to build an electric motor bike for my son Dom for his 5th birthday coming up.

I'm using an old JR 50 that needs a major rebuild. I'll make it electric for now that way he can learn about balance, throttle control and braking. He can also ride this any way as opposed to the petrol motor.

He doesn't know...it's a surprise.

Any way pictures.

I've ordered some multi coloured led valve caps that light up when they sense no light and vibration, so i will fit these to the tail lights and the front driving lights for some bling.

We muck around with 3 of the cars (I was the filming) and did a quick edit and now it's on you tube. very funny...

I also have some footage of me on 2 wheels for ages. I'll try and host that up very soon. Anyway enjoy the video.

No, but I was thinking about making a fiberglass mold of the body and getting 5 VW bodies made. I have a few people interested in a VW for their son/daughter.

I have to sit down and work out what these cars would cost me to build and what I could sell them for. I'd love to make a LJ and LX 2 door mold and get that fiber glassed.

I reckon I would sell a heap of them.

I've just popped home for a few hours away from the camp in which these cars are being used.

The response has been so good from the kids, they love them.
