As i am exploring all options I am interested in finding out some figures for VS - VZ Commodore fuel economy. Both the V6 and V8. Sedan or Wagon.
I am interested in figures for ULP/PULP as well as LPG if anyone has them?
Also peoples experiences with these commodores in terms of reliability, parts cost, services, and how much you can do on them yourself.
I am aware i am looking at several different models, but just looking to keep my options open.
thanks
Steve

We had a VZ SS auto. Over a 300 k trip on the higway with the cruise set at 120 we would consistanly get around 9-10 lts/100 ks. Not long after I got the car I did a round trip from here to Albany, to Perth & back home again (1,000 ks). Average speed was 115 kph (including city driving), economy was 12.3 lts/100 ks. One of my staff has a VZ SS manual & he gets down to 8.9 or so @ 110 kph on cruise on the higway.
I had no problems with the VZ, bloody good car. Wish I still had it.

My dad could get 9.6L/100km average out of his vx v6 auto wagon, with a combination of city and highway driving.
Mums car doesn't have a trip computer but i think it averaged 10-11L/100km (till i crashed it), mostly round town stuff in a vt v6 auto sedan.
EDIT: We've done very little maintenance on them ourselves, because they're kind of difficult. Usually the older the car the easier it is. I've done stereo stuff in all three which is about the easiest there is, that said interior stuff in general is easy.

Wrong lights to be a VZ. I hope you intend on keeping your LJ in your quest to find an everyday car Steve. I went through the same thing a couple of years ago with my Torana. I own a VTII V6 Commodore now as an everyday car and on good days, I drive the Torana. If I had to drive the VT everyday and not the Torana, it would send my mind numb. The VTII is pretty good on fuel and there is that many of them for sale, you should be able to find a good one and it wont be long, if not already, they will hit the wreckers in record numbers so you can keep her going with cheap parts. My 2 cents.that comodore looks more like a vy than a vz

Unfortuntely my situation means its not possible to have 2 registered cars. I hear you and would love to do what your doing, but its just not practical.

On Petrol its does anywhere between 11.5-16L /100km but mostly 13-14L/100kms which works out to be approx 480-540Kms per Tank.
On LPG (Standard Impco Kit) it does a lot worse at between 17-20L/100kms whick works out to be approx 330-410kms per LPG tank.
What I can tell you is I noticed an economy difference between what sort oil I used too. These motors usually use a 10w-30 oil but I tend to use 15w40 lately days due to the ammount of Kms its done.
However when I first got the car at ODO 185000kms and stock wheels & tyres it usually did about 11-13L/100kms on petrol & 10w-30 oil.
It never did any better on PULP than on ULP but it did go better

My VZ Cross8 averages around 17L/100kM. It is AWD and weighs 2 tonnes so not that bad.
My previous VY SS manual ute got about 10L/100kM highway and about 14.5 around town.
And prior to that a VSIII V6 manual got about 9.5L/100kM highway, 12.5 city.
These are all trip meter figures, never worked out if they are accurate or not.

I have also owned a 1994 VR V6 Acclaim Sedan(petrol Only) before the 2000 VX V6 Acclaim(Petrol & LPG) I have now.
The VR being older with more KmsWhich I had between 173000-235000kms ODO it needed:
a power steering pump seal kit(leaks), new Front struts & rear shocks, EFI Coolant sensor, A new dual exhaust (IRS rear end),
Radius Rod bushes, Steering Tie rod, Water pump, Battery, and the usual tyres, brakes & 4000km oil services during the time I had it.
It also had a PCM fault code 50 with the Turbo700 AUTO which was locking torque converter slipage for more that 10sec which would appear when doing >90kmh and set the hydrolic pressures higher and gave harder shifts until you to switch off motor and it all reset again. This is because the previous owner towed a boat regularly(stuffed it) but is apparently a common problem. (check for fault codes)
On the VX which I have now had between 185000-221000kms ODO I have only had to do brake pads and the usual servicing.
Ive driven VT's before but the VX is far better.
The only thing that effects both of these is the bably designed/alligned IRS and you will probably need camber kits(easy $200) depending on how your rear tyre wear goes, towing or how much its been lowered. However I think VX seriesII had camber issue correctled from factory.
As for LPG I wish I had investigated a smaller tank size for the VX as it took up a lot of boot space , especially as the VX has a flat floor boot.
My brother has VR with same LPG Tank and I reckon hes got more or better usefull boot space than I have with the deeper floor and upright mounted spare tyre in quarter.

Anyone had experience with VT SS (304)? Considering one of thses at the moment. Its too hard to find a VS without 200,000+ ks.

Its not possible to have two registered cars on my property. Neither the parts car or coupe are located at home, they are stored about an hour away.

My Mates old man use to have a 304 VT, He went pretty good, but it had all the common VT problems, VX's really seemed to fix most of the VT's little quality problems... So finding a VX might be perfect!
As far as economy goes, a 5.7L LS1 gets better economy than a 304 will. My ute gets around 14L/100kms and it goes like the clappers! With my inteneded mods, Me and my Tuner reckon we should get it under 13L/100kms (this is city driving)
On the open road mine gets <10L/100kms, (I hear some people say 7-8L/100kms, But i haven't driven to sydney to test that theory)

I've got a VS series 2 station wagon as my daily driver in Sydney (obviously plenty of traffic). Have owned it for 6 years and the fuel economy remains the same. Have travelled about 80,000 klms in that time.
I use around 15 litres per 100 klms in city traffic but it drops to 10 litres per 100klms on the highway. I have tried premium unleaded and regular unleaded and it doesn't make much difference at all so I just use 91 octane.

I am going to stand out alone here but if I were worried about economy I would not be looking at a V8 esp not with our uncertain fuel prices.
Herne
I'm simply garthering the info Herne. My other option is a $20,000 - $25,000 less than 5 year old Japanese 4 cylinder.
Do you feel the LPG price is going to match petrol soon?

I do believe no matter what the fuel source either now or in the not too distant future there will be some sort of parity. The major multinationals will see to that. In one way when we built my engine I wish I had thought about gas. I had to purchase a new carby anyway.
I have always said that if anyone is concerned about the cost of fuel they should never buy a V8

Cheers
