Hi all,

Can someone explain to me what the bands function in the trimatic and can you adjust it using normal tools at home?

Cheers

bands are a function like clutches, in laymens terms you could relate it to drum brakes, so when the drum engages that gear engages.
You CAN adjust it at home but it is a small adjustment and the amount varies with models and you can easily over tighten it and break something.
I find by the time you buy a gasket, filter and oil it is easier to pay a tranny shop the $80 or $100 and have them do it.

Thanks, you have a point.
Do you know what are the symptoms of a worn or out of adjustment band?

Slipping and slow to shift up.
Hows the fluid look?
Red or smell burnt and brown.

No, the oil looks & smells OK, and there is no real slipping to speak of,
but first to second change seems to have become just a little slower/longer than it used to be years ago.
While I have done regular oil & filter changes in the past years I havent done band adjustments during that time.
So has me wondering.

You can adjust it using normal tools (including a suitably small torque wrench, i.e. inch/lb measurements). A halfway decent manual will give you a step by step and the correct torque settings. The difficulty comes if/when you find other problems, if you are happy to rebuild other parts of the trans yourself then go for it, otherwise perhaps find a trans shop to do it.

My tranny shop charges $90 for a trimatic, hardly worth me even getting the jack out.

Yes, very true, I'm convinced. Now I need to find a reputable Tranny shop in the Nunawading area.
Thanks.

Don't forget to check for low trans fluid and vacuum leaks particularly from the modulator line.

There's a shop in Thornton Cres Mitcham that also have a branch in Ringwood.
Richard Keown? is the bloke to speak to. Stedz might know more?
