Another teething problem, cast iron (fly wheel) doesn't like being welded to steel, according to little bro the fitter & machinist, although still holding at the moment. I also ran the steel tube right the way through to the face, so while I liked having the support frame separate to the flywheel, I'm now going to have to weld the tube that passes through the flywheel to the support frame for an extra degree of safety. There is a chance that the weld of the dissimilar metals may crack.

The industrial supply shop did have some new welding rods for dissimilar metals, may look at that in the morning as well.

If you are going to use a similar concept to this, then you need to weld a steel flange plate to the steel tube, then bolt the flywheel to the flange plate (inner set of holes on the flywheel). Might do that myself when this car comes off.

Use a drive plate rather than a flywheel.

Is that out of a V8, or a slusher (tri-matic) Rodomo? If a V8 are the starter motor gears different? Makes it very easy if you can just weld it to the steel tube. I just used 3 bits of welding wire around the circumference of the hole to ensure that the tube was centred, squared it up, then welded them out while I welded the tube in.

Anyways, I will put in my safety welds today to make sure the thing don't pop off on me.

can you get some piecees (x 4) of flat bar like 50 x 6 or simliar, and lay behind flywheel with bolt through flywheel and weld to innear axle??

Could, but it will be easier just to get a drive plate for version 2. It's just a drive plate and a bit of 40mm tube (left over roll cage off-cuts).

I think its a great job you've done there Yella, but please excuse my ignorance, how do you lock it once you've rotated the shell?

With the 15:1 gearing, it just stays put, except when you want it perfectly horizontal, in which case I just stick a bit of metal bar in the end of the tube as a handle stop. I was going to weld a bit of chain and a keeper on, but it is not required.

Reminds me, I should make a vid of it in operation.

Thanks mate. I was going to go the two engine stand idea, but when you sit down and analyse it, all you are using the engine stands for is a frame to build from for alignment. All the steel + the little bits and pieces only cost me $150 + my time to build it. Only thing is, I don't have wheels, but pffft, it aint going nowhere.

It will be on it's side today while I grind away where some of the welds penetrated the floor when I welded the cage reinforcing plates in, and tidy up the boot rust repair.

Trying to work out if I'm going to keep the park brake or not. Being a race car, don't really need/use it, but it may be useful during transport. Decisions, decisions. Might just keep it so the car is reasonably complete.

Hi,looking at making one of these for my car. Just wanted to clarify is it 950 to the top of the post under the tube,or to the centre of the tube that it spins on?
Thanks
