I'm converting my LJ sedan to V8 & I've gone threw all the posts about steering & all I could find out is that I need 2 LH steering knuckles, there's nothing written or pics about how to do it, I'm sure someone can help me. Please. :D

you need to cut the existing shaft section below the LJ coupling near the crossmember and fit one LX coupling, the other LX coupling replaces the LJ one, also need to move the base of the steering column slightly to the RHS at the firewall mount and may need to shorten the length of the steering column housing, 4cyl units can be used as they are shorter than the 6cyl
the cutting of shaft and machining of the cotter pin grooves must be done cold milled in SA regs
I could measure mine if you need the lengths

Didn't do any of that column shortening stuff......cut the lower arm 4" above the crossmember or just enough to clear the subframe crossmember with the knuckle...use the offcut as the middle piece...fit to top knuckle...remove steering column...redrill holes over towards the throttle pedal about 20mm....bolt up..drive away...agree with cut cutting slots for cotter pins. Done. Don't follow everything WouldBee says in the attached link...the column stuff is correct...just use 2 steel LH types knuckles.

the column was shortened on mine, may depend on exhaust system used
also is there a difference in the column length for 4spd and 3 on the tree as there is a gear linkage hanging out the bottom of the 3spd column

Can 3 knuckles setup be used somehow, the starter motor is in the way. If i can't use 3, i will need to trim the firewall and send the engine back 20-25mm to get steering passed.

If its a Chev style motor with the starter on the drivers side you will need 3 knuckles.

so if 3 knuckles are used, wouldn't you need a support between 2 of them?

Correct. CRS sell a kit or you can make your own by passing the middle shaft thru a pair of 9/16" ID rod ends secured to the crossmember.

By the way the 4cyl steering column is a lot LONGER on the engine bay side than a 6 cyl unit.

I found a LJ 4cyl shaft in the shed. And the extra length will fix the problem. All i need to find now is a lc 4cyl shaft.

Adam , how is the gen3 conversion going? I found a sump but it's going to cost alot money @ 65cent Aus. How much room to you from block to k frame?

Colin,

Yeh its slow at the moment had to store it at a mates place for awhile...How ever im using the Moroso 20140 sump and it sits a little too low and too far forward (mounts) But with a few mods to my mounts ill get it in the right place...From memory ive got to move the motor 2 inches back and touch higher just to be safe.

Thanks
Adam

Dont want to steal th thread but out of curiousity if your using 3 knuckles wouldnt that negate the need to move column at base because this would give necessary clearance??
