one more thing when running in your cam if its a flat tappet hyd or solid run it in with just the outer springs for first 30min-1hour it makes a big difference to cam life,if its a roller theres no break in period.

I'm with Greg and LX406, these days things don't need a long bed in proceedure. Engine dyno would be the best way, but failing that then in car is fine.

Can't use the stock springs on cams over 0.450" lift. Ppl who do run the risk of coil bind and wrecking everything.

My break in procedure:

Engine primed and ready to fire, running outer springs only. I use a running in oil (usually Penrite).

Fire up and immediately get revs above 2000rpm for oil flow over the camshaft. I vary the revs but don't take it above 3500 at this stage.

Bed cam in for 20mins, use this time to set base timing, check leaks, basic tune.

After 20mins switch off, drain oil and change filter. Refill with more running in oil & new Filter (I use K&N or Hard Driver Synthetic filters).

Then its out onto the road for a quick lap of the block, to check basic tune/timing etc. When I'm happy with that its out for a decent drive 20-30 mins under varying load. With just the outer springs in I don't rev it harder than 4500rpm.

Once back I fit the inner springs (usually the next morning when its cool) and we're finished. :)

Keep in mind drag motors are built to be raced for all of 7seconds... Street motors are built to be daily driven!

Drag motor $150,000, the average street motor would be lucky to cost $5-7000.
What would you risk?

Run the cam in...
Let the engine heat soak a couple of times.
Check all fasteners are good and tight (no leaks).
Run the car up a long incline the longer the better...let load in 1 gear higher than normal (not labouring) just loaded more than normal. punctuate this with........... (the ocasional drop it back a gear and floor it)!!
Few good stabs of the throttle on the way home...after say a 20 minute drive like this it is ready for redline.
These days the rings will seat within 10mins of initial fire up if the correct grit was used on the hone.
If the rings haven't seated by then, they aren't ever going to seat!
Ready to race!!!!

Cheers Greg..

This is exactly how I ran my engine in after a full rebuild and raced it for the first time with under 500ks on her, on the burnout of my first run pulled it to 8000rpm (I shat myself) rolling threw the water, as I didn't know the engine that well yet, and haven't had any issues with it since.

Brett, does the head gasket need replacing? You mentioned you had a leak there.
