Rory, a couple of questions for you....
Jonny Leffler's F5000 was a Bowan P???, was it an F2 car with a 5 litre stuffed into it?
The beautiful Elfin MR8, what motor did it have in it? I am getting confused (old age) between McCormack's Charger as
I know one of them had the Leyland alloy V8 in it.
The late Garry Cooper was years ahead of his time.

My pick of the best looking F5000's, the Lola T332 and that Elfin MR8.

Thanks for that Greg.
I use to catch a bus to work each morning in front of Peter Wherrets house, I loved
seeing all the new cars in his driveway and clearly remember the white A9X Hatch, GMH test car
he had for a few weeks.

RIP Peter.

MR8 by far Louie.
Johns car was a Bowin P6 F2 ...they stuffed a Repco F5000 engine in it..Now lives at Tamworth driven by Neil Farr...Now called Bowin-Hay P6..holds most records in hillclimbs on the Eastern seaboard....Leffler raced it under the Grace Bros banner..same team as Pete and the Super Falcon XY and Leo's Porsche.
The MR8 had the Repco...then later of memory it had a 4.4 alloy Leyland motor in it..then that motor went into the McLarem M23 F1 car with Mccormack....motor currently is in Neils Bowin P6 hillclimb car...or most of the engine bits anyway he tells me.
Gary was Bruce McLaren, Jack Brabham Colin Chapman all rolled into one..the man was a genius and I am so glad Bill Hemming (I didnt ask him how much or where he got the $ from!)has purchased so many of the cars and opened a museum in Gary's honour....pure Aussie genius.

Thanks Greg and Rory, they were great days. You would go to Oran Park
and see the "Toby Lee" series, Moffat capri, Jane torana, Harrop EH, Thompson VW,
Geoghegan Monaro, Mckewon (?) porsche, Older BMW. etc
and then
the F5000, Stewart, Allison, Goss, Leffler Bartlett etc.

Truly great days of racing.

Rory, (or anyone) how did the Kiwis end up with 25 of the 32 F5000 cars that were entered in Melbourne?
Is there many left in the USA or did they suffer the same fate as what happened here and ratted and cut up and turned into
sports sedans?

Surprisingly Louie the NZ/OZ F5000 revival has spread...UK first and now to the USA...They both have associations for the restoration of F5000...things are looking good! Mike Hailwoods Surtees has turned up among other well know cars A J Foyt, Peter Revsons car etc

Am I right in thinking a lot of the suspension components and wheels were
made from magnesium and these parts have a use by date? and if so are they being
remade in alloy now?

I think the Cortina belonged to Graeme Moore. Pottsy had a silver LJ from memory, with a one piece front. Similar to Frank Ure's, but not as technically complex.

A few posts back, the Repco Leyland F5000 motor was mentioned. It was initially used in the MR6, but was swapped back for the Holden. J Mac then took it to the M23 McClaren. I am not 100% certain, but I don't think it was used in the MR8. As for the Charger, that used the Repco Holden F5000 engine. After Edmondson sold it, I think Dave Ferral put a Chev in there, but it may have happened before him also. That Charger may be getting brought back to life in the medium future too, with a bit of luck (and a possible lotto win  )

I heard that the "Flat plane crank" Holden F5000 engine produced about 25hp more than the
chevs did, but every nut and bolt on the car had to be loctited so not to vibrate loose.

Sagman/Larry rang me from Philip Is...He said..The F5000s are on!!....Then..Bbrrrrrmmmmm...past him...I said,...thats a flat plane crank Repco....He said...You know?..Youre not Bad!!...It had such a distinctive sound you couldn't miss it.
Louie,.... Peter and Grant ..as normal practice...drilled and tie wired every nut anyway...something I do on most things as a matter of course like the sump nut etc nowdays......you might be right..Frank always said his arse was numb until the next day so that sort of fits.
