As the title suggest why do people believe an L32 to be an important car . L32 was the guise for 4.2L and SLR option so it seems. These cars did not win Bathurst or do anything of significance so why do people believe they have something special ?

Your thoughts ?

With some here anything that is not an S, S/L or god forgive a Sunbudgie is treated with high regard. The all magic SL/R sticker and high number L tag does it all. Gotta laugh :) They say it turns mums taxi into a beast lol
Get a grip folx!!!!

Cheers

Maybe expand the question a bit:

Why do people get all excited about anything with a 253, not just L32? For example would an L33 plated car be as exciting as an L32? The same phenomenon isn't just restricted to baby Holdens. Original 253 HT-HZ Monaros, GTS's, Sandmans etc also get people excited. Remember that an original 253 example is much better than one with a 161 or 173! Especially a 173 4spd 4 wheel drum HQ Sandman, or 161 3spd on the column, 4 wheel drum HK Monaro. Or a 202 auto SL/R for that matter - i'd personally prefer a factory 253 manual SL.

Yep you nailed it mate. I was happy when i bought my car with what it was, but then when i looked at the plates i was happy that it was a factory v8 sl. I guess others would be happy because of the same thing, factory v8, and it being an upper spec model. But saying that i wasn't ecstatic about it, like i wasn't jumping around thinkin i've just bought the best car on the earth. Just happy

Factory V8 Torana.

Standard SL/R 5000 didn't win Bathurst either.

Whats your point?

You could also ask why people dont generally value a six in a LH/LX as much as a eight, but get excited over any LC/LJ with a six? It comes done to what resources you have and what you prefer.

I like to think of it as best of breed.
I love LC LJ 6 cylinders.
I love LH LX V8s.
Personally I would prefer a 253 LH or LX over one Chev powered. Not that I wouldnt admire the workmanship that goes into the Chev conversion.
Similarly I would much prefer the 6cyl versions in LC LJ. Again I would admire the workmanship in the V8 conversion.
Guess my personal preference runs toward modified stock. Keeping as much original as possible, but allowing for use of some modern technology.

In the end people should enjoy what they like, and not be bothered by others opinions if they dont agree.

Toranavista, i'd say thats cause the hero models in small torana's had the 6 cyl and hero models in the big torana's came with v8's

To be strictly correct an SLR5000 won in 1975 and 1976, but you are spot on with the obvious intentions of the comment ie an L31 engined car never won Bathurst, hence making the comment about the L32 never doing so mute!
Although L31 plated cars did race at Bathurst, speculating: 1973, 1974, 1980, 1981 1982, 1983 and 1984 plus any original roadgoing A9X's in 1977-1980? Maybe any left over 1984 L31 VK's in 1985/6? Not sure if an L32 plated car ever raced there??

Thats why I put the 'standard' in front of it. I knew someone would bring up the L34.

Maybe not Bathurst, but the LH SLR 5000 does have a racing pedigree!

You did too! I missed that. Although (tongue in cheek) an L34 optioned SLR is still a standard SLR isn't it? Just an optional engine (with associated other bits that came with the engine), just like M40 was an optional transmission....

The 253 is a sweet real world (speed limits cops cameras etc.) and unbolts to a 308 or stroker later.

The wife has an L32, SL/R4.2, SL/R4200 whatever you want to call it but the thing that drew her to it was the fact it was the car she wanted to buy when she got her licsence, it was only by chance that it came up for sale and the cash was available.

The fact that it is an L32, SL/R 4.2, SL/R 4200, whatever was a bonus for us and i consider it the poor mans L31, SL/R 5.0, SL/R5000, L34, A9X because we can't/couldn't afford the latter, i also consider it a case of same dog different leg action.

If you want to go down this road. Why would anyone want any model Torana. By todays standards none of them go any good as standard 6 or 8's, they don't stop or handle very well. Hey I love them, but it really has nothing to do with what engine they have.

I had 253 that I thought went alright until I got blown off at the lights by a single point EA falcon. Embarassing for a V8!

253's aren't that bad... They sound good, they look good in the engine bay and they can go pretty well if they are done right. Even to todays standards!

Piss off the 2 Barrel, and replace it with a correctly jetted Quaddy, Put in a decent cam, put some bigger valved heads, fit some extractors and a decent sounding exhaust. And you will have a fun car to play around with on weekends. Sure it might not blow away a newer car off at the traffic lights. But I bet you it will still put a massive smile on your face!!!

If you know your car aint fast, dont race people off at traffic lights... Just putt off and make them think that your car is fast and too good to show off in front of them! LOL!! I use to do that with my old 253... All my mates thought it was the fastest car in the world! LOL!

My 253 now though is pretty decent and has pulled a 14.4 qtr mile...

^^^^^ I couldn't agree with you more. I think 253's are a great engine and was not putting sh#t on them.

What I meant was that if you are going to pick holes in a 253, the other holden alternatives are no better just different and we all love or Torana's for what they are, not what other poeple think or in most cases how they go.

Sorry if I offended any 253 owners, I actually like them especially a little stroker - smooth and rev really nice! Long live the 2 5 flea.

I own one and am not offended, just wondering what's the point of starting a thread against a factory v8 Torana on a Torana forum?
