the triplem trays are really good. and having sides makes it alot easier to carry parts.

I agree with regards to the tray. Leave the alloy + sides in! If you put a new timber tray in it'd almost be too nice to use (and scratch!)

I saw a 3 series BMW covered in astro turf today and their truck too. (Lawn company)
I'll try and get a pic. If I can remember where I saw it?

Get some Purple shag pile carpet and cover the cab in it, and lay down bright green fake grass and play mini golf. or maybe even lay real grass out of ur yard to keep costs down, then u can grow plants n shit. grow some weed and then u can become a dealer and deliver it fresh green so some dick can choke and set ur POS ute on fire and blow the fu%^ker up.

on topic, i actually had old hilux that i took the aluminium tray off and added a flat timber one to years ago. It went heaps slower cos the thing weighed twice as much and had to tie everything down without sides... for practicality and economy you cant beat the aluminium trays... maybe take the sides off when you dont need to transport anything, and to be really economical glue some of that timber look vinyl to the aluminium tray !

I reckon you'd be crazy to lose the alloy tray. It will never rust, it's light, and they are so bloody practical. Who cares if they're ugly look at the front half of it!

Id comment but i dont want to add fuel to the fire
sounds like you couldnt put more fuel on if you wanted...
Sarsha's doing more to cars than most guys on this forum, so keep it up... and I would leave the tray on, you said you wanted it for a daily and parts car so keep it practical
