I picked it up yesterday. off my workmate whos owned and mistreated it for the last 15 years or so.

The body is shagged. only alrite panels are nosecone bonnet and boot. and possibly 2 doors.

its got a mildly worked 179 hp motor in it with yella terra head, the block was balanced and blue printed when it was done up so he says.
Genie extractors, cain manifold and 350 holley.
M20 four speed and 3.36 old banjo according to the id tag under bonnet. code GV4.

Just wondering if the block is worth hanging onto. because the motor does not run. it cranks over and just backfires very badly throught the carby. on the weekend i hope to inspect to see whats wrong with it. possibly blown out a piston or head gasket.

any ideas appreciated.

Keep a hold of the engine! I have a worked 179HP in my UC, i believe that these motors are less appreciated than they should be! Basically they are a 186 with a smaller bore! This means that you can bore it out 120thou in total in comparison to the 186 and 202's 60thou! This is good news for anyone wanting to rebuild one of them!

Mine's got the same gear as yours (350 Holley on CAIN manifold and i have pacemakers), ive got a bit of internal good stuff and some other nifty worked parts on mine too! Good enough for a 14.8 down the 1/4mile...

As for the shell.... If its got too much cancer, i'd send it to someone who recycles parts as it's probably gonna cost you a fair bit! As long as the running gear is in a 'restorable' condition (within reason), i'd keep it and get rid of the shell! Locate yourself another LX (if that's the model you want) and build up your running gear from the other one and chuck it in the new one! You'll find a decent LH - UC torry/sunbird for less than a grand these days! Ahh, the possibilities!

FOUND THAT THE NUMBER 5 INTAKE VALVE ROCKER WAS LOOSE! it runs now.
what can be done about the rocker adjusting nuts on these cylinder heads. most of the ones on this hp motor are not very tight on the stud and they would freely vibrate loose> I tried giving one a few hits with a center punch it made it lock up a bit better.

I bought a set brand new last year from GMH. Only cost a couple of bucks for the lot.
