Just Wondering if any one knows if the UC Torana ever made it to the race track back in the 70's or 80's. I mean there must have been atleast 1 team that wanted to race it rather than a commodore or LX.

LJ XU-1: 1090 KG
202 UC: 1150 KG

60 KG isn't much different. Plus the LJ didn't have RTS.

If GMH didn't delete the 308 from the Torana range, it could well have been a different story. Not that I care, my UC will spend more time at Heathcote and Calder than Bathurst.

Exactly.. if theyd gone ahead with the 308 LJ, nothing would compare, not even a 308 in a UC...

I would almost guarantee that is a LX with a UC front on it, as you could never race the UC unless they had made the homologation requirement of 500...

er...guys it was a 1 minute photshop job, I meant it as a joke to follow on from Chop's line about dropping the 308.

I'm pretty quick with a mouse! and have a loooot of pics in my computer
to play with.

Sorry for the confusion.

Wasn't there a dealer in NSW turbo-ing UC 202's when they were released? If they had of made homologation it would of been interesting. Probably quicker up the mountain (lighter) and not far off the pace down the straight I would reckon. Not to mention pulling up quicker (again due to weight). But we'll never know. I remember reading a motor mag with an article about this.

You are talking about Suttons Motors in Sydney building what the called an SL/T.

Bog stock 202 with a Strata 2a turbo strapped on the side.

Similar performance to an A9X or a 72 XU1, but not very reliable.

The article is reprinted in the Spotlight on Torana book, its from Modern Motor October 1978.

Reminds me of how George Fury cranked up the boost in the turbo Bluebird to win Bathurst pole then slowly slipped back through the field during the race.

Modern day turbo technology would give better reliability.

James

i don't remember those being that quick from the article i read, not compared to the slurs anyway,
i think the whole aftermarket turbocharging back then had a lot to be desired..

Reminds me of a certain Dick Johnson in a Turbo Sierra cranking the turbo right up during the race only to end up in a full on smoke trail!!!!

Those Sierras were a bit delicate, more than a couple of minutes in the pits with the motor running and game over after a few more laps.

There was a company in SA putting a turbo on the UC 202 and claimed it was quicker than an A9X in street trim. It probably was, but an A9X in race trim, I doubt it. Besides, how much boost can you put into a 202 with no intercooler before it breaks. Remember this was in 1980. Technology has advanced alot since then. I have an article in a magazine, but I can't find it.

Aerodynamics would be the major factor as to which would be quicker around a race track - (if running the same engine). The lc/j having a smaller frontal area would be my guess as to having an advantage there, but the reverse could be true if they didnt get it half decent in the wind tunnel.
