Hi
Just want to know the difference between a LH/LX 6 cylinder diff centre and a LH/LX V8 diff centre and is a LC/LJ diff centre different to a LH/LX diff centre?
Asking because I am chasing a diff centre for my LH SLR 5000.
Thanks

basically all banjo diff centres are all interchangable, aslong as you have the corect axles (course / fine spline). The only difference between 6 cyl & V8, is the V8 has a bigger Flange to take the bigger uni joint. But you can change the flange to make it a 6 cyl & vice-versa.

well i know they have a different yoke.. AFAIK thats it. course and fine splineand ratios are all found on all banjo torries yes? slr500 original would have had course spline axels i believe

Difference is the yoke. Early LH SLR5000 (like pre L34) should be coarse spline, L34 onwards should be fine spline.

That's the sound of the crownwheel trying to break out of the back of the housing! :D

As far as I know a lot of the LX ones were still coarse spline even in the V8s, so yeah the only difference is the yoke

Some centres have a long bolt at the bottom and some a short bolt.
I think the long bolt is early holden, like HR and older.

The long and short bolts are for different ratios; 3.08 and 2.78 have the long bolts as the housing is shaped differently to give more clearance to the larger pinion

Yeh? my LX manufacturered 12-77 had fine spline 3.9 ratio its original factory 4 cyl format. I find it some what unusual the the 6 and V8 of the
time would still have had coarse while they where putting fine in super powerful 4 cyl model. :)

question on this.
my lj has the 2.78 diff ratio, i want to change to 3.36. will the 3.36 fit into the 2.78 housing or will i have to get a 3.36 housing, or there is a easy mod??

cheers

The 3.36 will bolt in, you just need to use a second short bolt because the 2.78 housing will have a female thread on a second hole (besides the drain hole at the bottom), whereas the original 3.36 one would have had a stud.

thanks. sounds easy as
one more question, these banjos ok behind a warm 6 with about 200+hp? street driven, odd drag at the lights/tyre smoking. nothing too hectic like strip work. have a 9inch, but think ima have to sell to cover extra panel work *sigh*

It is sad but true, Holden did put coarse spline axles in the 6/8cyl cars and reserved the fine spline axles for the 3.9 centres.
I just don't know what drugs they were on at Holden sometimes.

It should be fine, if in good condition. You will always be able to destroy the Banjo if you really try, but mine held up behind the V8 until I started drag racing and abusing it in general. An open diff will generally last longer because it doesn't tend to stress the axles as much (the weakest link).

The 9 inch is overkill in my opinion, sound insurance but a lot of unsprung weight in a small car.

12-77 is fairly late, I think most LXs came with fine spline axles, maybe not the very early ones.
