Hi All

Can someone tell me what is the correct oil filler cap for a 10/72 LJ XU1? I have seen a quite a few different ones used and all owners swear they are correct. Maybe different factories used different caps? Chrome would make sense (to match the rocker cover) but not many photos show a chrome one.

The parts catalogue shows a different one for the XU1 but doesn't show a picture.

Type 1 Silver painted with cut-out.

Type 2 Silver painted with no cut out-but lettering (rinse in kero or something)

Type 3 Chrome with cut-out.

Type 4 Silver electroplated (a bit like dull chrome or nickle) with cutout.

Type 5 Dull bronze/gold with no cut-out with lettering.

Also:

The correct master cylinder cap - should it mention Delco or is that too early?

Thanks

Bazza

Thanks to far.

The oil cap sure is a mystery - particularly when most XU1 owners believe that they have the correct bits.

And the brake master cylinder cover/cap - should is say "Use Delco"?

Thanks gtr-xu1

The parts catalogue doesn't specify a special cap for the XU1. All 3300s have the same number. The cap for the smaller 6 cylinders has a different P/N.

I assume that the chrome cap (with the cutout) was an after market GMH accessory to match the chrome rocker cover.

Does the silver cap with the sticker have a cutout?

Thanks

Hi gtr-xu1

The cap that came with my car is the same as you have posted (including the transfer) except painted black. It is probably the standard cap of that era.

The dull chrome one that I have has a piece cut out of the side of measuring about 1 1/4 by 1/2 inch. This seems to be an aftermarket one.

I guess I will have to paint my black one silver.

Thanks

Thanks everyone.

Sorry to labour the point, but the LJ parts catalogue specifies

P/n 7422035 for the 2250 and 2850 engines

and

P/n 7435374 for 3300 engines.

This apparently means that the standard 3300, GTR and GTR-XU1 all shared the silver cap.

Can anyone confirm this?

I don't know about the late 73 cars but the 4 XU1s that I've owned have all had silver caps with black lettering telling you how to clean them in kero. The silver colour is "Bright Silver" I think, which was used by GMH on the grill on LJs as well. The paint code for "Bright Silver" is in the Antonio book but you won't be able to get it mixed because paint shops don't generally have the formula for these old miscellaneous colours any more but there are people who have the formulas for these colours.

It's also probable that caps other than silver may have been used if they ran out of silver ones on the production line, in that case anything they had at the time would have been used.

Hi

I think that it has been fairly well established that this is not original.

Thks Bazza, the only caps I have seen have the sticker. the one on my car is chrome, aftermarket i imagine(same shape as original. Looks like Silver up to late 73 and Black for the Bath XU-1s. Sunburst
