I just picked up 2 HQ crash pads for next to nothing, one has 2 small cracks in it but isnt warped and has mounting tabs intact. The other had no cracks but the vinal is lifting on the passenger side (not bad but noticable) and above the glove box.

Is there anything i can treat the crash pad's vinal with to make them supple again, if i can make them supple again i might be able to take the warps out of it im hoping!

Thanks
Damien

hrmm, no ideas? Leather conditioner wouldnt bring it back to life, or once there dry and brittle ish there no good anymore? I can press on it and it doesnt crack but it feels very stiff, too much sun.

Once the vinyl has dried out it is pretty much had it. A friend of mine used Dubin and a heat gun to try and get some life back into his dash pad. It worked fairly well but you just have to be careful not to apply heat to the dash pad in one area for too long.

Try using Lanotec spray. It seems to work. Spray it on and when it starts to dry out, spray it on again.

Lanotec is a trade name for lanolin. You can use it for all sorts of things. Should be able to get it at most trade shops. I got my 5lt tin from Blackwoods. Not cheap but it lasts a long time. Just great stuff. Do an Aussie Google and get all the info.

lanolin is good for lots of things... as it is not petroleum based it is great for rubber orings as well as they wont swell.. always use it on swimming pool pump orings.

Please tell me you mean "compressed wool" or some other element in a sheep.

Lanotec can be got as a can from supercheap etc, its lanolin which is a wool grease, is widely used as a rust preventative. once the vinyl has dried out forget it, its usually from irreversible chemical reactions induced by heat and UV exposure. normally over time volatiles (normally plasticisers which give a material its flexibility and elastic properties, and residual monomer) are lost from the plastic over time.

dont use solvents on vinyl es ketones (acetone MEK) or esters (ethyl acetate) etc. as they will dull AND PARTIALLY DISSOLVE IT

Lanolin is found in sheeps wool and is a natural moisturiser. Sheep shearers may look real tough but they have the softest hands.

Selleys RP7 uses lanolin as the lubricant and WD40 uses silicone - RP7 is the one I prefer.

As for vinyl and plastic, if you notice the dusty film on the inner windscreen above the dash after the car has spent time in the sun that is the plasticisers that have escaped from your interior.

When the plasticisers are released from exposure to sun, heat, time, etc. the material becomes brittle, you can't put them back in no matter what you rub into it.

Agree with Stephen, once plasticisers are out that ain't going back in!!

With all the mucking about buying RP7 etc, why not look for another dash pad?
Spray it up if the colour is wrong.

Re-vinyling is way too costly, and you wont ever get it to look right
using RP7, WD40, Lanolin, Sheep guts or anything else!!

My 2c.

I wouldn't recommend using RP7, WD40, etc. on vinyl, it also has spirits in it that would more than likely dry it out.

Finding a good one with no damage costs a stupid amount of money (on ebay atleast, $200 ), may aswell just spend the extra $$$ and get one from dashorigionals which they say wont warp or crack like the origionals.

The vinal dyes i've used look great, just make sure you clean it well before painting. The dash isnt a high wear area so it should last, im not sure how they handle the UV's tho.
