The difference in your theory compared to the topic is that intercoolers are an air to air heat transfer. This puts a different perspective to flow as air flows quicker than water. Most current Jap cars have 2 cores but maximum matrix area per application (a hands on observation) and are efficient, which gives creadance to removing heat from core while maintaining water flow as per old school in that "water" flow is at the same rate but "air" flow is maximised through matrix area and cooling fans.
