I'm currently doing up an LX Hatchback an i'm thinking bout changing to bigger wheels. I've got 13" hotwires on it at the moment but i was thinking maybe putting 14"s on it because most people seem to have em that size. what would be the advantages/disadvantages of this? also, how wide would i want to go, given that i don't have the flares on the car? any help would be much appreciated!

cheers

Bigger wheels allow the later fitting of larger brakes and possibly better selection of tyres (how many new cars run 13"??) Many here run bigger diameter wheels and wider rubber without any guard massaging, there should be no shortage of replies.

I'm about to fit 15" wheels to my car and you can actually find tyres, you have a choice of more than one, it's a nice feeling.

Try 205/55/15 on the front and 225/50/15 on the back. The rolling diameter of the originals was about the same as this. Personally I would use a 195 on the front as the front track is around 25 mm more than the back on a standard car. Otherwise the fronts look too big or the backs too skinny.

My Hatch currently has 195/60/14 on the front and 215/65/14 on the rear and i think it looks good.

Personally I wouldnt run any smaller than a 15 inch wheel, 14 inch GTS wheels would be the exception. Here is my LH with 15x7 rear and 15x6 front, with 225/60/15 and 195/60/15 tyres

Yeah mate, that's fine lookin'. When i get some more cash together (the hatch is being resprayed as we speak) i'll definately upsize the wheels, might even look at a set of Simmons B45's...

On my Hatch I have 15x8 (225/60/15) and 14x7 (225/60/14)...they were on the car when I bought it but the fronts are just all wrong, need new tyres on the front so I'll probably go for 205's

15 x 8 on the rear with 225/50/15's
15 x 6 on the front with 205/50/15's

i want to put 195 on the front next time

and yes a way bigger selection of tyre sizes in 15's than 14' or 13's

cheers

I was always happy with 15X7 all round on my SS with no flares, but I ran 205 55 15 on the front and 225 50 15 on the rear, no scraping

Chia, they are lowered Pedders in the front and the back are trimmed standard ones, I am going to get some standard commodore (model unknown) ones for the back.
