hi guys,

i'm just wondering if i'm going to need an engineers cert when i eventually get my car registered. the only major changes is that i took out the 138 engine and reaplaced it with a 186, and changed the gearbox to a five speed celica box. do either of these modifactions warrant a cert.? thanks :spoton:

Not that I am aware of. I went from a factory 161 in my lc up to a 202 with webers and the RTA didn't even ask when I regitered it. But if you're concerned just give Vicroads a call or your state registering office and they will tell you.
Cheers Chris.

In Qld you would require a mod plate for the gearbox

by the letter of the law in victoria if you have a power increase of 10 % then you need an engineers cert....as far as I am aware it isn't policed and is almost impossible to enforce.

Gearbox "x" member may be an issue.
I have never seen this mod. but would suggest using original "x' member if poss. and redrilling holes to suit. Any welding could draw attention at RWC time.

FastEH, that law applys for 10% over the most powerful engine available for that model, a 186 wont have 10% more power than another 186 or 202 witch would have been the most powerful engine available for a LC or LJ respectivley.
as for the gearbox, you would need a cop deadset on giving you a canary to even notice

Now with a 138 in it that would be a drum brake front end would it not? Brakes may be an issue, Not sure if it is, But I would definately look into a disc conversion.

Cheers SUPALJ

in qld u need a mod cert for a 202 in an lc cause they didnt come out with one, doesnt matter that theyre basically identical to lj. gearbox u will def need one too. get them all done at the same time, first one usually costs about $80, then $20 for each one after that, and get them all on the same plate otherwise your engine bay starts to get messy :P
