What is everyone's thoughts on car insurance????. As i am getting a little pi$$ed
with them because every year that comes around the premium goes up but the
coverage always stays the same. I personally think it should rise with the
yearly premiums.

Yeah apparently Shannons is really good, A mate of mine wanted to keep his 1950's Falcon completely original, but there was something wrong with his windscreen, so Shannons said they would replace it for him, and if he wants or needs he has the option to replace it every 2 years. Not a bad deal I say, and he said his rates are the cheapest he's found.

Ring LSV (Lumley Special Vehicle Insurance) I have just insured my Hatch for $30,000 agreed value, Limited useage (8,000 k's per year) $277.64. The policy also has choice of repairer, wreck retension (free)if it is required, windscreen option etc, etc

I have cliamed through them when a dottery Ford driver just about destroyed my hatch last December and i found them very helpful and understanding to my circumstances.

I have no problems recommending them

My thoughts on car insurance?

Its a prick of a thing that you cant go without, and because they know that, they can charge ridiculous prices for our peace fo mind.

One gripe I have with Shannons is that they wont insure any driver under 25, even if they are passionate car enthusiasts.

Its the tools in riced up Falcadoors that ruin it for the rest of us young fellas.

But thats where Ill be switching to when Im of age.

Currently insured with NRMA for $406, cheapest I found.

I'm with Shannons and I thought the price was quite reasonable etc. Haven't had to make a claim yet...

I have three with Shannons, would be 4 but the Prado is a lease car so i stuck with there insurance but will look at changing to Shannons next year when we do another lease for a new car.

#1 Tracie's SL/R, parked in shed with layed up cover with agreed value $5,500.00.

#2 Alex's Torana, with extreme limited use cover with agreed value $4,500.00.

#3 Alex's VT Commodore with comprehensive agreed value $10,000.00.

Costs me $504/yr and Alex is down as a driver and he is 17 and think from memory they said he can take over the Commodore insurance when he turns 18 but will be a bit more expensive.

I dont think so.
Im in the same boat Josh. Ive got Excellent driving history and lock up garage with limited km's etc etc. Prices were well over $1500 from shannons for 25k vale on the hatch.

I think its the over 25 thing mate. Im just with SGIO, fire and theft on my Torry and Navara.

Evan.

Just Car is a load of shit. But mate considering you wrote your daily off... good luck

Try places that have the majority of their business in mainstream cars but have a range of classic car insurance options. I know GIO do it and I think there are others

I've been driving for 16 years and have never had an accident or made an insurance claim (not even for a windscreen replacement!). For all of those 16 years I've own and insured two cars, at times paying close to $3,000 a year to insure both when I was younger (owning two V8's doesn't help!)

I look back and think to myself, what if I didn't worry about having insurance and saved that money instead... have to be close to $25,000 easily.

But it's just not worth it. I know I'm a careful driver, the problem is the other clowns on the road you have to worry about and have no control over.

*THAT* is the issue mate...
I've never insured my cars for any reason other than to protect myself from becoming a victim of other peoples stupidity.

If I ended up hitting a brand new merc or beemer.. i'd be stuffed!

All i can say is Insurance is a necessary Evil. Do your research, Ring around, DONT ASSUME ANYTHING - ASK, and forget what your "Mates" tell you... find out for yourself. You will find someone keen for your work and they will do the right thing by you as Shannons did by me.

Oh.. and one last thing i've found.. you MUST shop around EVERY YEAR as sometimes you will find insurance companies will jack up premiums to repeat customers, but give better rates to NEW customers to lure them in.
Dont be lazy and just renew... get on the phone and ring around for quotes.

Cheers

I agree with Josh i rang around & found that LSV was the cheapest and i got a great deal better than the past insurer even offered me.

LSV works out cheaper for me but it's a mathematical equation system based on your personal situation. Might be dearer for others.

Insurance sucks but it's a necessary evil (money for nothing as most people don't make claims).

Enough said.

I've used Shannons for all my old cars and have found them to pretty good. Don't know if it's a recent thing (well, within the last 4 years anyway) but I never had an issue when I was under 25 either.

I was thinking that too mine was def with them before I was 25 I went digging for the old policy's but don't have them that far back but pretty sure I just had a higher excess.

i was 21 when i got insurance with shannons (squeeky clean driving record), made a hail damage claim with them last year and they were good. but recently their premiums and excess' went up significantly. so i will be shopping around as insurance is due soon, havent spoke to them yet but i'll be pushing up my agreed value on the torana from 10k to 20k if i stay with them as the car has just been fully rebuilt. 20k is still nothing compared to what i spent so far....

I had a quote from GIO for my hatchback it was something like $220 a year full comprehensive insured for over $7000 and i was probably 21/22 then i'm 24 now. You have to ask for Vintage and Veterans insurance. There was no limit to how much i could drive it and i got salvage rights etc.. I thought it was a good deal. But your car has to be older than 30 years.

Just a quick update for those currently with GIO under their 'Vintage & Veterans' Policy - it is being pahsed out and cover transferred to Shannons. I got a renewal quote in the mail from Shannons (with GIO covering letter), premium is bout $100 more than GIO was. I paid bout $295 last year & will be paying $393 this year with Shannons - still a really good price for an under 25 year old, full comp & agreed value ($8k).

The bloke i spoke to even used to own a holden with tough 186 and was giving me all these tips on performance lol. I rang to update all the details on the policy cause GIO had SFA noted on the schedule or the details were incorrect, so make sure you check the schedule carefully when it comes in.

cheers,
mick
