It is largely unknown, for good reason, that if you have a clean driving record for 10 years you can write a letter to the authority saying it was a slip up and they will let you off. They do realise that everyone makes mistakes every now and then.

I did this, I reminded them of my clean record, explained that hidden speed cameras had been banned a few weeks after I was caught - this probably had some pull.

I did mention I understood what I did was wrong and at the time I didn't realise I was doing much over the limit as I had just gotten off the freeway, was driving on a deserted 6 lane road in dry conditions (told them to check the picture) in a recent model car that was mechanically A1.

They let me off.

dude ,hidden speed cameras banned? really? your shitting me? please tell me more. does that apply in qld as well? they got to the unmanned one on the toowoomba range recently ,unbolted it tipped it arse over head and smashed the shit out of it apparently. i couldnt stop laughing when i heard that on the radio the other morning.nice one fellas!Posted Image

OKIES, sorry 4 the delay in my reply.

I have sent the request for review, as said b4 I am probably pushin #hit up hill. But I had 2 give it a go.

this was my letter:

To the Manager,

I am requesting a review of expiation notice number M322407-X A.
Dated 12/08/09, 9.08 am.

At the time I was travelling north on Portrush road in the right hand lane approaching the pedestrian crossing. There was a B double truck in the left lane (can be seen in pic). I needed to turn left onto Kensington road, as I was half way along his back trailer I decided to reduce my speed and change lanes behind him. As I slowed the semi slowed at the same time because the traffic lights at Kensington road had turned red. I reduced speed even more as to allow myself to change lanes. As I was watching my mirrors for the back of the trailer, the lanes in front of me and the Kensington road lights, I was unaware the pedestrian crossing lights had changed as my view of the lights was obscured by the trailer.

As per the speed-reading on the pic I was travelling at 26km/h and was attempting to change lanes safely. I honestly did not see the lights change.

Kind regards

I doubt they will do anything about it, but my view of the lights was blocked.

Totally illegal!

You will notice speed cameras all have warning signs upon approach.

When it first came in 90's some time some cops would put the warning sign after the camera but the stationary speed cameras and red light cameras are raking in so much cash they have made the roadside cops all but redundant. When was the last time you saw a highway patrol car? The highways used to be swarming in them.

Dunno bout anyone else in Newcastle, but I rarely see any coppers on the road, and due to working different shifts at work lately I'm on the highway at all different times.

Good luck with it Kaz, stick it to em if you can.

We see plenty in WA, The Police State, but then we don't have fixed cameras.

The roadside cameras are operated by a private company or at least non-active police, and they only have the sign AFTER the camera.

I see heaps of police cars because I have Police Headquarters and the Police Traffic Branch within a couple of minutes walk each way from where I work.

There is some talk that they are going to put in fixed cameras at some traffic lights which are red light cameras and speed cameras in one.

Good luck Kaz, I think you have put forward a reasonable argument there, and even if you don't get off, you've given it a crack. Long story short, you shouldn't be punished for it if it wasn't a deliberate decision to run the red light and you weren't being careless. From what you've said I'd let you off.

red light cameras and speed cameras in one.

A demented and sinister plot to grab our money.

You drive up to a light, it turns orange and in a panic to save you from getting a red light camera fine you put your foot down to make it through the light while it is still orange - KABLAMMO! you get done for speeding!

Yeah, that's what they're trying to stop.

Also people who sit on 100 through the lights instead of slowing down to 80.

Its really getting nuts over here.

Pretty soon they'll be confiscating cars cause they look like they could go fast.

Don't know how relevant this may be, but i did beat the wallopers....once. Got pulled up one night near parliment house in Canberra by an over zealous cop because the tail light fuse in my car blew. He wasn't interested in my explanation that i was unaware i had no tail lights until he told me he just defected the car & gave me a $89 fine. I opted to go to court. when the judge asked me why i was driving with no tail lights, i outlined the the blown fuse occurance & pointed out "how am i to know i have no tail lights unless someone pulls me up & tells me" judge said OK case dismissed.Posted Image

they have stopped putting the 'speed camera in use' signs after the parked up plain cars that have the camera on the front, due to the operators being harassed.

BULLSHIT I say, we can still see the stealthy bastards. Just another way to keep us in the red.

We also have the plain cars and highway cars with the little camera growth on the window.

I saw a dopey blonde 'p' plater pulled over on the freeway the other day. She was done by a plain car. He had pulled her over just after the speed limit was reduced on the freeway to 25 due to a truck blocking one lane. I was cruising doing my the 25 and everyone else was screaming past, that was until they turned the coner and saw the copper. I hope they throw the book at her. People just dont realise the dangers of ignoring the reduced speed limits, let alone the fines.

The argument that the cops are revenue raising always comes up, but I don't think we can really argue.

If you're not speeding, they can't ping ya. End of story.

I read a chain email lately about some blonde with a sign on her rear window asking cops not to pull her over because she is pretty - apparently she gets hassled quite a bit for doing nothing wrong.

Fair comment but it is not all the time black and white.

One example I come accross all the time is when u come up on a slow vehicle, start overtaking only to have the slow vehicle speed up on you. If this was to happen when you are overtaking you will have to speed up to over take. Putting yourself at risk of being pinged.

Another example is if you are an aware driver and can see a semi approaching an intersection on your left (ie he will be merging into your lane via a flow lane at lights)you know if you put your foot down just a squirt the semi will be able to smoothly continue his merge behind you, but if you continue at set speed the semi will have to come to a stop.

THUS adding to the conjestion on our damn bumpy roads.

Common sence has to prevail, but rarely it does.

Take heart in the Judicial system Kaz as today i fought the Law and i won. Last December i was pulled over in the darkness of dawn as i was travelling to work.I was in amongst a group of 5 cars and the cop said i was the one who he beleived was doing 19 kms above limit.
I stuck my neck out and challenged it not knowing whether i would be beleived above a cop.I won as the cop lied and under cross examination his story kept changing. The secret here is if you are innocent the truth sometimes wont let you down. The icing on the cake is the cops have to pay my costs of $3050 big ones.No donuts in that station for a whole month they are limited to bread and butter sandwiches with sprinkles.
Go getem KAZ

When was the last time you saw a highway patrol car?

s

Yesterday morning, standing side of the road, radar gun in hand pointing back down the road, no warning signs.
They are there most mornings 05:30 - 06:00.

I think ,the best time to challenge , is at the time it happens , if you get pulled up ! And always try as ,you really don't have anything to loose.

I got caught doing 69 in a 60 zone back in June 05 by a camera car. I admitted it was my car and I'm the only driver. As a courier, I stated I probably was at that location and probably was doing that speed. I asked for a review based on my good driving record. It was then downgraded to an official warning.

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. If it costs nothing to appeal, give it a try. The worst that can happen is you get a bit longer to pay the fine.
