Sounds like faulty voltage stabilizer, and or bad earth from the voltage stabilizer. You need to recitify ASAP or the windings on the gauges will burn out.

Its a little silver box looks like a small flasher can i guess, it has 2 prongs coming out of it and has vdo stamped on it. If it is faulty it can be replaced with one off an sl dash they are the same.
Oh and yes it is on the back of the cluster

As the guys have said.. the regulator has blown.

You'll be lucky if the guages arent cooked!!

When mine went it took ALL the guages with it, (SL/R cluster). Cost me $215 from memory to get them ALL re-wound and perfect...

Cheers

If you need another one you can take one from the back of an old SL dash (same regulator)... I did a quick guide in Tech articles.

There's a kit from Dick Smith I believe but the unit is a lot bigger than the regulator in the back of the SL or SL/R dash, I think it works a different way - the one in the torana is just a bimetal strip that makes contact and releases it constantly (as it heats and cools) to regulate the voltage, when the strip dies there's no more regulating and the gauges get a full 12v making them 'max out'...
